Chapter - 12

"He's handsome, Jace. Every girl would want to date him. "Hell, if he asked me out, I would say yes in a heartbeat." Doll was looking at my face seriously, and it only wants me to bash someone's head on the wall. But I took a few steps back and turned around to leave this place. The anger was bubbling inside me second by second. And if I don't leave this place now, someone is definitely going to the hospital. Skylar was calling my name frantically from behind me. She was trying to stop me, but she did what she wanted to do. As I was forwarding towards the main door, people cleared my way out of wariness. "J, please stop. Jace..." When I was descending the porch stairs, warm hands grabbed my arm, making me halt in my place. I didn't turn around to look at the face that just confessed something I would never like. I don't like it a little bit when something is mine and dreams about another person. I don't want to see her face. "LET GO" I boomed. The music coming out of the house didn't affect my angry tone. Skylar yelped behind me at my sudden burst, and her hand slipped from my arm. For a second, I felt bad for doing this to her, but her every word was like a tiny needle piercing into my skin all at once. The thing that hurt me the most was that she was ready to date Danny without a second thought. I stomped to my motorcycle and wore the helmet. When I was kicking on the break and it started, I let the motorcycle roar a few times. But in those few minutes, she jumped behind me on the motorcycle and hugged me from behind. "Get off" I said, narrowing my eyes at her by looking sideways. Doll shook her head and tightened her grip on me. I closed my eyes for a heartbeat and accelerated the motorcycle once more before speeding off. I zig-zagged through the traffic when I heard Doll yelp and tighten her hold on me. I slow down the motorcycle. She doesn't get scared easily by the drive, but today I went above the limit, which scared her. "I told you not to follow me!" I scolded her, turned the motorcycle to the peaceful place near the bridge I always go to, and turned the engine off. Doll gets off the motorcycle before me. And then I walked to the small bump and threw my foot back to kick a pebble. I ran my fingers through my hair and heaved a sigh of frustration. "It looks like someone really doesn't want me around himself." "Umm... Well, then I should leave." I heard her talking to me as if I didn't understand her tactics. I rolled my eyes and ignored her. I felt her footsteps fade slowly as she walked further away from me. I continued glaring at the scene in front of me. She won't let me be in peace for a single second. As I was trying to zone out her rustling because I knew she would come back after her plan failed, I heard a soft gasp and then an oonf sound. I ran in her direction and found her hunching down on her knees and clutching her foot. Crouching down to her level, I saw her bleeding. Her moist eyes shined under the full moon. I leaned towards her, making her lean back. When I was sure that I had the doll's whole attention on me, I pulled the thorn out of her foot and then showed her the thorn. Doll's mouth hung open at the sight of it, and then she smacked me. "You could have warned me!" Doll exclaimed and stood up on her feet again. Scoffing at her action, my eyebrows scrunched on their own, and I also stood up. "Seriously? Instead of being thankful, you hit me. Is that how you thank people in your previous school?" I asked and walked past her to the previous place I was standing, bumping my shoulder against her in the process. I looked into the distance, hyperaware of my surroundings. When the sound of her steps increased and she came to stand beside me, I expected her to retort, but instead of doing that, she did the exact opposite. "Thank you, and I am sorry." Doll mumbled. I looked at her through my peripheral vision; she was wringing her hand and staring forward. "You own me two apologies!" I smirked. She couldn't see my face anyway on this side because of the darkness. Doll looked in my direction and frowned. "For what? I apologised already." She was unsure. Ugh, this girl. She literally has no idea what she does to me without even doing anything. "Oh yeah? What were you pulling with Danny at the party?" When my question registered in her mind, doll's eyes widened for a second, and she moved her head the other way. I swear to God, the speed was shocking. "Umm... You would've done the same thing if you were me." Okay, so now she's trying to turn the table? I will give her exactly that. Just wait, doll. "You know what? Actually, you're right. I never thought about Ruby. She's pretty and intelligent. I would date her if she wasn't with another guy." I said it confidently and smiled. I know that doll gets jealous when I talk about Ruby. I admire Ruby. She's a nice girl with a pure heart. She helps everyone and spends her free time in shelters. Ruby is ambitious and a planner. Her time is very precious to her. "I know, right? She's just amazing. But I know she won't date you for sure." What did she just say? And on top of that, the way she said it like My trick didn't work. "Oh really? Just admit it, doll, you're jealous. And do you really doubt that with my charming personality I wouldn't be able to attract Ruby?" I asked while raising an eyebrow. Doll tried to sound casual, but I saw her throat. The way it constricted. "Obviously, duh. Ruby's into guys who are smart and good-looking, but you're..." "Try to complete that sentence, doll." I challenged her, but mostly I was only pretending. "J I am just saying... you know... But I hope you find someone like her." I burst out laughing. I pointed my finger at her face while laughing because her face was worth seeing. "Got you. How was the taste of your own medicine doll?" Doll smacked me on the shoulder blade with an annoyed expression, but soon a smile broke onto her face, and she said, "You're such a jerk." "Yeah, a jerk you like." I stuck my tongue out at her and then ran for my life. Doll was behind me. We were both a giggling mess when we reached my motorcycle. "To home?" I asked while putting on the helmet and putting the key into ignition. Doll nodded and wiped the sweat from her neck with a clammy hand. "Ughhh... It's not starting." I groaned, looking at the fuel metre. I tried to shake my motorcycle and start it again, but it was no help. I slumped down and saw doll, removing her helmet. "Maybe you shouldn't have been meany-moe to me." Doll laughed. She signalled me to get off the motorcycle, which I did. There was no point in sitting on it. I pulled out my phone to let Sam know that my motorcycle's fuel tank was empty and he needed to pick us up. Before I could send the text, Doll snatched the phone and cleared the text bar. "Let's walk and drag this baby to the petrol station." I kicked at the gravel underneath my shoe and trudged towards the motorcycle. As we started pushing the motorcycle, the cold breeze of the night hit our faces. The road was silent; every few minutes, a car or two would pass through us. But as we continued pushing the motorcycle alongside the road, I heard doll, humming a tune under her breath. She was barefoot with her sandals tied to the handle at the backseat, and her body was relaxed. "This isn't so bad..." "Yeah..." I agreed with her because we got to spend more time together. I would give anything to spend time with her. With her, difficult times seem bearable. We didn't talk much the entire way to the gas station. Only a few jokes here and there. Her laugh echoed on the empty road, and it made me feel content. As we reached the petrol station, I started filling up the tank but couldn't help myself from being mischievous. "Payback is a b***h, you know." "Oh no. Not here, J." Her eyes widened with alarm. I put the gasoline pipe in its place and charged for it. The helmet was already on her head. When I got a hold of her, I grabbed her by the waist and did a 360-degree turn. She squealed when I lifted her up and continued to spin her around. I put her down and removed her helmet. Her giggling stopped. We were so close that our noses were almost touching. When she saw me looking at her lips, she licked them and gulped. Doll inched herself up enough to reach my lips, and I leaned in and cradled her face in my palm before initiating the kiss. Doll's eyes fluttered shut when I increased the movement of my lips against her soft ones. I felt her melt into me. Her warmth mingled with mine while she clutched my jacket for support. But she doesn't have to; I would catch her every time before she could even slip. As we pulled away, we rested our foreheads against each other and controlled our hot and ragged breath. After a moment, I put both hands over her shoulder to push her forward, and we made a beeline to the shop to buy a bottle of water and something to eat. As we entered the shop, I went to pick up some snacks and a bottle of water. Doll was looking around at the various items on display. When I walked back to where doll, was, an idea popped into my head. "Whatever you're thinking, no." My smile dropped. How can she know what I am thinking? "You didn't even let me say it." "Yeah, because I know that look of yours and it means trouble." The smile was back on my face. She's such a killjoy. But the glint in my eyes didn't fade. "It's a great idea, Sky." "Oh really? Ok, tell me about this great idea of yours." "What do you think about the chances of us getting caught after not paying for this?" Doll's eyebrows pulled together while she eyed the snacks in my hand, and she looked up when the dots connected in her head. "Are you serious? We're definitely not stealing anything. The last thing I want is a stamp of burglary on my rep card." "We are not going to get caught, babe... It'll be a thrilling experience, trust me." I insisted, and then she looked around the shop and eyed the security camera mounted on the wall while a cashier sat behind the counter. "Did you see that? Jace, just pay for this, and let's not drag this night any further." My grin faded a little when she denied it again, but I have already decided. "Common doll... Live a little?" I pouted and made eyes like a puppy to compel her. She stomped her foot and turned away from me. I took that as a go signal and dashed towards the exit. I heard yelling behind me and saw the cashier striding out of the counter. He was slow. When doll realised what just happened, she also followed behind me. Reaching my motorcycle, I put the snack and bottle in the helmet and handed them to Doll. She was still shocked by what I had just done. We pulled out of the gas station with a pounding heart. Adrenaline is rushing through the veins. We just stole a bunch of snacks. "What the hell was that, Jace?" A rumbling laughter erupted from my chest, and I shook my head in disbelief as well. "I wanted to do something crazy. But it was exhilarating, don't you think?" I saw doll rolling her eyes through the mirror. Even she started laughing. I know she got scared for a moment there; that's why there was a dried tear mark on the side of her eyes. As we rode off into the darkest part of the night, I couldn't help but think about the fun we had. The boys will make me do this again if they hear about it. We reached Kylie's mansion, and I pulled up at the curb and killed the engine. We both got off the motorcycle, and I walked her to Kylie's porch. I pulled my phone out to text Kylie, but there were already several text messages from the group. The last one said they were leaving the party and would be at Kylie's place. It was sent to me 20 minutes ago, so I guess they won't be far. Sky patted on the space beside her on the porch, and she opened the cap of the bottle to chuck more than half of its contents in her mouth. We decided to munch on the snack while waiting for the group to arrive. It was 3 in the morning, and we were so high on adrenaline that it made us belly laugh.
