I wasn’t prepared for dinner with Dominic Castellano.
It wasn’t just a meal, it was a stage, a performance, and I was expected to play my part.
The dining room was intimidating, with its vaulted ceiling, candlelight glinting off crystal, and a table so long it could host a royal banquet. Dominic sat at the head, a figure of power and precision, his gaze fixed on me as though he could read every thought I wasn’t saying.
“You’re quiet tonight,” he said, his deep voice pulling me out of my thoughts.
“I’m observing,” I replied, forcing my tone to be light. “Trying to understand how a man like you… lives.”
His mouth twitched in what might have been the ghost of a smile. “And what have you learned?”
“That you like control,” I answered without hesitation. “And that this contract marriage of ours… might not be the safest place for me to be.”
For a moment, his expression hardened. But then he leaned back, swirling the wine in his glass. “Safety is an illusion, Talia. What you should be worried about is loyalty.”
Before I could respond, the butler appeared with dessert, a delicate chocolate soufflé. It was almost laughable how something so decadent could be served in a moment thick with unspoken threats.
The tension only deepened when Dominic’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, and something in his eyes shifted, sharp, alert, dangerous.
He excused himself from the table, leaving me alone in the vast room.
That’s when I noticed it; a faint draft coming from the far side of the wall, near a decorative panel. Curiosity tugged at me. Rising from my seat, I approached, running my hand along the panel until I found a barely visible seam.
It opened to reveal a narrow passageway.
And inside, hanging on the wall, was a single framed photograph of a woman I didn’t recognize. Her beauty was striking, but it was her eyes that caught me. It seemed sad and almost pleading.
A voice behind me made me jump.
“You shouldn’t be here,” Dominic said, his tone calm but laced with warning.
I turned, heart pounding. “Who is she?”
He stepped forward, closing the panel with one smooth motion. “Dinner is over.”
He didn’t answer my question.
But the flicker of something in his eyes told me I’d just uncovered the first crack in Dominic Castellano’s carefully built armor.
And I wasn’t sure if I wanted to see what was hiding beneath it.
