My heart stopped.
“Leila?” I breathed, blinking hard, not sure if I was hallucinating from stress or sleep deprivation or both. But there she was, standing by the door like a madwoman.
She looked different. Her white coat was gone. She was dressed in all black, her hair tied tightly back. The only thing that didn’t change was her eyes. There was no warmth in them, the same way she always looked at me.
“What the hell–what are you doing here?” I snapped. “You disappeared! The whole pack–”
“There’s no time to explain,” Leila interrupted. “You need to come with me. Now.”
I stared at her. My mind raced with questions, suspicions. “How did you even get inside the house?” I demanded. “There are spells, barriers. You shouldn’t have been able to get past the perimeters.”
