CHAPTER FIVE The Jeep, now that they were out of the woods and on the back roads heading toward Anchorage, was a cut above the battered vehicles that Sadie was used to seeing around the hinterlands. It was a new model, a black stretch that must have cost more than most of the locals’ houses. It was a detail that pricked her curiosity even further. She hung back, keeping the Jeep just within her sights as they started to approach the main road into the outskirts of Anchorage. She wondered if the driver lived in the nicer suburbs, but he seemed to be heading more toward the port. Named aptly as a place for vessels to anchor, the small city was a harbor town that had been founded in 1914 at the base of the glacial Chugach Mountains, intended as a base for the Alaska railroad.
