Right when Darren's eyes told me he thought I was just spitting angry words, the door to the emergency room creaked open.
The doctor stepped out, his face heavy with bad news, and said, "The child is out of immediate danger, but his kidney function is damaged. He still needs ongoing treatment, and if he doesn't recover well down the line, he's at risk of developing uremia."
The tight knot of anxiety in my chest loosened for just a split second, only to leap right back up into my throat.
But Darren just breathed a sigh of relief and said, "As long as he's not in danger of dying, that's good enough."
I'd only thought he'd betrayed our marriage. I never imagined that to impress his homewrecker mistress, even the life and safety of his own biological son would come second.
Haydee showed up long after everything started, putting on a perfect act of trembling fear and regret, a few fake tears glistening deliberately on her cheeks.
"Elena, Elena, I'm so sorry. I really didn't do this on purpose. I bought imported formula from overseas for my son. I was just careless and grabbed the wrong can. It's all my fault."
As she spoke, she pulled up her purchase history on her phone to back up her lie. "Elena, look, this is the formula I bought for my son. I really just mixed up the cans by accident."
Blind rage consumed me. I slammed the phone I held straight at Haydee's face. "Are you blind? My son doesn't need a homewrecker like you feeding him!"
Hearing her call my son her own hit me like a slap to the gut. How dare she claim my son as hers?!
The phone smashed right into the corner of her eye, and the spot immediately swelled bright red.
She yelped in pain, and Darren immediately pulled her into his arms, coddling her like she was fragile glass.
He roared at me, "Haydee has already apologized! What more do you want from her?"
Even as the words left his mouth, he swept her up into a bridal carry and sprinted straight back toward the emergency room, acting like the world was ending.
He insisted the doctor treat that tiny scratch on the corner of her eye, one that would've gone down on its own in a single night.
He didn't care at all about how I, his legal wife, felt at that moment.
My whole heart turned to ice. The old memories of our sweet, loving marriage split clean apart from this moment of brutal betrayal, like the two sides were tearing my body straight in two.
A tidal wave of agonizing pain crashed over me. My head spun, my vision went black, and I crumpled to the floor unconscious.
When I opened my eyes, Haydee was standing over me, a cold, creepy smirk playing on her lips.
"You're awake now, Elena?" She leered down at me, young as she was, oozing that arrogant, determined aura of someone who's already certain she's going to take my place.
I didn't even bother giving her the time of day, too lazy to even acknowledge her.
I already knew exactly what she was going to do next... rub how good Darren is to her in my face and flaunt how happy and in love she and Darren are just to get under my skin.
But even I never could have guessed what would come out of her mouth next.
"Darren said he's letting me raise our son, to make up for what I did. It'll also be good practice for me. Once I have my own baby with him, I'll already know how to take care of kids."
Hot rage boiled over inside me, and I pinned her to the spot with a gaze sharp enough to cut.
"I'm warning you one last time... don't you dare touch my son!”
She smirked, her whole expression dripping with contempt, convinced I was too weak to stop her.
"Elena, why be so petty? We already share the same man, why can't we share a child too? I don't even mind, so what are you worked up about? Besides, it's not like your opinion matters anyway. You do whatever Darren tells you, and he does whatever I tell him.
"Why ruin your relationship with your husband over such a tiny thing? Don't worry, I won't mistreat your boy. I’ll just try not to feed him dog formula, that’s all."
I'd seen these tired, cheap tricks before, back when my father had his own mistress.
So I put on a great show of being furious and helpless, and spat out at her, "You b***h! You'll die a horrible death!"
The moment I turned away, I arranged for my son to be swapped with Haydee's newborn younger brother.
Just like her daughter, Haydee's mother was a mistress crawling her way into a wealthy family, dead set on using that baby boy to secure her place as the official wife.
