Chapter 18: Getting ready for the date

1361 Words
Kai Maybe eating raw meat had helped because when Natasha came back, she was in the middle of telling me about the date that didn’t go so well when I started feeling better with my mood. Leo and Joey were helping Grayson track down the mutt, checking out the last places he used his credit cards, and all that detective stuff. While they were busy doing that I was trying to figure out where to take Natasha for our date. To be blunt, I f.ucked, I didn’t date. I went on dates that started with a few drinks and flirting at a bar and ended with me between the sheets with some hottie. I’d never taken a girl out on a real actual date before, I knew the basics, wine and dine, but Charlie had already taken her to a restaurant and I didn’t want to copy him. I found Amber in Leo’s office, I don’t know why she liked hanging out in here, ok, yeah I did, it was the quietest place in here if you didn’t want to be bothered by the pack, or you could try to hide in here at least. “Amber,” I barged in making her jump. “f***k, Kai! Don’t do that!” “Why? You watching p.orn?” I grinned. “No! What do you want?” She sighed at the end of the sentence. “What’s Tasha into?” “You need to be more specific.” I walked further into the room and picked up a pen of the table and started clicking it. “Stop, you man child!” She snapped. I pulled a face and put it down. “Sheesh, sorry.” I leaned against the desk and shrugged, “I don’t know, what’s her likes and dislikes, what makes her happy? What does she enjoy doing?” “You’ve known her as long as I have.” “Yeah, but not romantically.” She grinned then, “oh I see, you want to take her for that date tomorrow?” “Do you know or not?” I asked, growing flustered, but hiding it behind impatience. “She’s definitely not like her mother, she loves all the hearts and chocolates stuff, loves romance. She’s as much a big kid as you are, she’ll probably enjoy something simple yet fun, anything gaming wise, or the movies, or books, she loves her books.” I nodded. “Thanks.” “Great, can I go back to my peace and quiet now?” “Yep.” I left her to it. I tossed and turned thinking on it all night and for the first time in my life I woke up before ten in the morning. I pulled on some jeans, a sky blue sleeveless hoodie and pulled on my boots. I won’t bore you with my morning routine, it was the same as yours, werewolves weren’t savages, we lived like humans, mostly. I left my place and walked past Natasha’s. I climbed into my car and drove into town. I looked through different shops not really sure what I was looking for. “Do you need any help?” I jumped so hard at the sound of the voice and clutched my chest dramatically making the woman laugh. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” “It’s fine,” I smiled. I’d been so distracted I hadn’t been aware of my surroundings, not good when you were a werewolf and danger seemed to lurk around every corner. “Did you need any help?” She asked again. She batted her big brown eyes at me and was playing with her hair, I knew she wanted to flirt, but was unsure if she could. “Uh, I’m looking for something for my girlfriend,” I said. F.uck, I had no clue why I called Natasha my girlfriend, but here we were. The woman stopped playing with her hair and looked a little flustered feeling both disappointed and embarrassed that she almost came on to someone else’s man, I’d seen the look enough times to recognise it by now, sometimes I’d turn a girl down gently by pretending I was a taken man, and they always looked like this woman. “I’m sure she’d like these.” She took me over to an area that had flowers. Were roses too cliche? Probably, but then Amber had said Natasha loved all the soppy romance stuff so she would probably like the roses. I got her the unique looking blue ones and grabbed some Ferraro Roche chocolates, I knew they were her favourite. While I was queuing I was behind an old lady who was in a mobility scooter, she was so frail. In front of her were a group of people, a mother, her mother, and maybe some teens that were the younger mother’s children. They’d bagged their stuff and were talking about points on a card, I was in Tesco, you could have a card for club points that saved money on items, they didn’t have one and they along with the cashier tried explaining to the lady if they could use her card, it wouldn’t affect her in any way, she could use it again for her own stuff in a sec, it would also give her more points, but she was old and confused, and she didn’t quite understand. Now, Grayson was more wolf than all of us, but every werewolf had that built in instinct to respect your elders, these people were not, they were all growing impatient trying to explain to her and when she was trying to find her card they kept giving each other eye roll looks, and it was p.issing me the f***k off. Usually, I never said a word in situations that had nothing to do with me, werewolves liked to keep to themselves and not draw attention, but with the elderly it was different, she dropped her card and someone sighed, and I lost it. I grabbed the card of the floor and gave it to her and shoved mine in the cashiers hands. “F.ucking take mine.” “What’s with the tone?” One of the women asked. “You’re disrespectful, all rolling your eyes at an elderly lady, as if she owes you anything, she doesn’t owe you Jack f.ucking s.hit, you don’t have a club card? Tough f.ucking s.hit, your problem not hers she isn’t required to give you hers to use.” One of the teens giggled. “What the f***k are you laughing at?” I snarled. She shrank back in fear, I probably showed too much wolf in my glare and I toned it down a bit. “Don’t talk to my daughter like that,” the woman said. “Don’t disrespect the elderly, and maybe teach your daughter some manners. Pay for your stuff and go, you used my card, now you’re just holding up the line.” She glowered at me but paid for her things, and they all left. The cashier couldn’t look me in the eyes, and was probably glad when I f.ucked off. I patiently waited for an elderly man to move away from the entrance, he was standing there looking through his things, if it had been someone younger I’d have lost patience and pushed my way past. When he finally moved, I put the stuff in the back of the car and drove home wondering where to take her for the actual date. Lara and Grayson had a f.ucking epic love story, I wanted to try and create that same essence for Natasha, even if it was only a first date. She liked simple things yet still fun? Ok, I could work with that, I knew where I could take her. I kind of avoided her for most of the day, suddenly I felt as awkward as a teen with his first date. I think I checked myself in the mirror more than a dozen times before I went to get her a few doors down. Did my palms feel clammy as I left? Nah.
