Chapter 4: Misunderstanding

1196 Words
Lucas carried Megan out of the hotel. Standing at the entrance, the typically decisive Lucas found himself in a dilemma. The effects of the drug were starting to kick in, and Megan's hands were becoming restless, unintentionally igniting a fire within him. Lucas, a normal man, was struggling to resist. But unlike scoundrels like Liam, he respected Megan's choices. Throughout their marriage, he never crossed the line because Megan was unwilling. Sighing softly, Lucas gently pressed a point on Megan's neck, causing her to instantly fall into a deep sleep. Holding the sleeping Megan, Lucas hailed a taxi, preparing to return to the Bennett family home. On the way, he called Michael, "Send me a set of silver needles, as quickly as possible." Just as he arrived at the Bennett family's building, Lucas received the silver needles sent by Ray, encased in a fine sandalwood box. Entering the house, Lucas carefully placed Megan on the couch. His movements were gentle, as if handling a porcelain doll. If the members of the Dark Dragon Temple saw this scene, they would be utterly shocked. When had their thunderous Dragon King ever shown such tender emotions? The sleeping Megan looked less aloof and more vulnerable, her brows furrowed, and her face flushed. Lucas watched her beautiful face, which he hadn't seen for years, his heart swaying. He reached out to gently unbutton the first few buttons of Megan's shirt, revealing her snow-white skin and the faint outline of her undergarments. "She's really a temptress," Lucas murmured with a smirk. He then focused, taking out the silver needles and starting to work. His medical skills, learned in prison, made short work of the drug's effects, taking only three minutes to complete. Just as Lucas finished putting away the needles, the front door turned. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, carrying bags of groceries, walked in and were stunned to see Lucas. "Lucas? You, this good-for-nothing, you have the face to come back?" Mrs. Bennett began scolding immediately. Seeing Megan unconscious in front of Lucas, Mrs. Bennett became even more furious, rushing over and accusing, "What have you done to my daughter, you beast? Couldn't keep your hands off her, could you?" "Dear..." Megan's father, Ken Bennett, also approached. He said helplessly, "Say less, will you? He's just gotten out of prison, and it seems Megan is sick." Mr. Bennett was a gentle man, and fairly kind to Lucas, although he was under his wife's thumb. "Shut up!" Mrs. Bennett snapped, "Even if Megan is sick, it has nothing to do with this good-for-nothing. Get out!" "What’s wrong with her? Why is her face so red?" Mr. Bennett frowned, touching Megan's face, which didn't feel hot. He successfully diverted the topic, drawing Mrs. Bennett's attention. She noticed the unbuttoned buttons on Megan's shirt, her face turning red with anger. Mr. Bennett also noticed and looked at Lucas with disappointment. "Lucas, I thought you were just a coward, but you're bolder than I thought!" he scolded, his professorial demeanor still evident. "You're a disgrace to our family. Get out!" Mrs. Bennett was even more furious, slapping Lucas's arm harshly, her nails leaving scratches on his skin. "You're worse than an animal! You’ve ruined Megan's purity, you wretch..." Lucas's eyebrows raised, a flash of anger in his eyes. The Dragon King of the Dark Dragon Temple, though reluctant to harm women and children, was no longer the pushover he used to be. He quickly grabbed Mrs. Bennett's hands and pushed her gently. She stumbled back a few steps and fell to the ground. "You should care more about Megan instead of making a scene," Lucas said coolly, his expression indifferent. If he hadn't returned in time today, who knew what might have happened? "You dare hit me?" Mrs. Bennett shouted in rage. She wanted to continue her tirade, but a cold glance from Lucas sent a shiver down her spine, silencing her. Mr. Bennett also felt the chill, looking at Lucas with fear. In the midst of this tense atmosphere, Megan suddenly moaned on the couch, struggling to open her eyes. "Where am I?" Megan sat up, her head throbbing. She looked at her furious parents and the cold-faced Lucas, confused. "How did I... get home?" "Dad, Mom, what's going on?" Hearing Megan's voice, Lucas's aura softened. The older couple, no longer daring to face Lucas, rushed to Megan's side. Lucas stood still, watching Megan with gentle eyes. "Dear, do you feel okay?" Mrs. Bennett asked anxiously. "Just a headache," Megan replied, rubbing her head. She suddenly trembled, remembering the drink she had before losing consciousness. Her heart sank. But she felt no discomfort, aside from a few unbuttoned. "It's good that you're okay. If we had come back any later, who knows what this beast would have done to you!" Mrs. Bennett said bitterly, glaring at Lucas. Mr. Bennett snorted and muttered, "In my opinion, you should get a divorce quickly. Why keep such a scoundrel around? He was just acting like a hooligan, trying to scare your mother and me!" Hearing this, Megan's gaze turned icy, and her tone became cold. "Lucas, aren't you going to explain?" "Explain?" Lucas's lips curled into a faint smile as he shook his head. "If I say I saved you, would you believe me?" Feeling the sting of doubt from the person he loved, his heart ached, and he turned to leave. But then, Megan's cold, puzzled voice came from behind him, "Are you sure?" Her question sent a chill through Lucas. "Think whatever you want." "After fulfilling my promise to help your company through this crisis, if you want a divorce, I, Lucas Bennett, will not say a word against it." With those words, he left without looking back. Watching his resolute departure, Megan felt a pang in her heart. She clenched her hands tightly, wondering if divorce could be taken so lightly. As soon as Lucas left, Mrs. Bennett erupted in anger, shouting and screaming. "Arrogant good-for-nothing! People like him should be thrown in jail. I'm calling the police! What good can come from someone who's been in prison for years? I bet he's a r****t!" "Mum... he probably didn't do anything to me," Megan interjected. Mrs. Bennett, frustrated, said, "You’re too naive! Tell me, what exactly happened today? Why would Liam drug you?" Lucas, standing outside the door, heard the noise inside, felt no more attachment, and walked away. If Megan lacked even this bit of trust, then there was no point in forcing the marriage to continue. The promised five million would be his compensation for failing as a husband. Just as he reached the bottom of the stairs, he received a call from Michael. "Boss, the Bennett family is holding their annual gathering tomorrow night." "It's a time when the various branches compete for attention and resources. Miss Bennett hasn’t fared well in the business for the last two years and has never had the upper hand at these meetings." "Ok, come to the Bennett house to pick me up." Lucas responded dully and hung up. He stood by the roadside, glancing back at the familiar window, his sense of disappointment deepening.
