Mrs. Hank burst into Jennifer’s room, determined to make sure she was prepared for the wedding but as she pushed the room door open, she realized she wasn't there. Her heart began to race as she began panicking rushing from room to room. “Jennifer!!! “Jennifer!!!” She yelled out her name and she looked for any sign of her daughter but to no avail. In a single second, she began to imagine all the terrible things that could have happened to her. “Has she fled away? How on earth do we bear the consequences of his wrath?” She asked herself as she placed her hand on her head and the other on her waist. Mrs. Hank moved quickly down the stairs shouting for the servants to help her search for get daughter. “I cannot lose her, not today, not now, not on her wedding day, not when she is about to get married to the most powerful man in town” she mouthed. She went ahead to search every room in the house, but she was still nowhere to be found. “Where could she have run off to?” She could feel her heart race faster as reality set in. “No, I must find her, I must bring her back. “I cannot let her make the biggest mistake of her life”. Mrs. Hank paced back and forth, her face etched with worry as her husband walked in. “Where on earth is Jennifer?” he asked firmly. “I do not know” she replied her voice breaking. “ I've searched the entire house, but she is nowhere to be found”. He raised his voice in anger “My daughter’s wedding is just a few hours away and you're telling me she's nowhere to be found?”. He was just about to furthermore question Jennifer's mom when the room door creaked open. Jennifer entered in, looking very exhausted, her hair damp from the rain. She carried a bag in her arm as she looked up. “Where have you been?” Her dad demanded, his voice firm and harsh. “I needed to get away to clear my head” Jennifer answered, her voice barely above a whisper. “What do you mean you needed to get away?” her mother cried out to her. “Your wedding is today and you cannot just disappear like that”. “I just needed some time alone to think,” she said softly. “I didn't mean to cause any trouble” she exclaimed. Jennifer walked up the stairs, each step heavy with exhaustion. Her father was just behind, his expression filled with anger. He turned over to his wife when they had just reached the top of the stairs. “Go and be with her, get her ready for the wedding,” he said in a low tone.”We cannot let anything spoil this marriage.” It is the best thing that will happen to every one of us.” Jennifer’s mom nodded, her face etched with concern, before turning to go to Jennifer’s room. Jennifer followed her, head down as she walked towards the room she called home all her life. She had now made up her mind to go ahead with the wedding after she was abandoned at the bus station by her lover. She thought bitterly that even if she had no atom of love for him, it wasn't bad being a billionaire’s wife. Jennifer stood before the large mirror, her eyes red and swollen from all the tears she had cried out all night. She had previously gone to wash her face, trying to compose herself, but the pain she felt was still fresh. As she was getting dressed, Mrs. Hank knocked on the door and entered with an expensive and stunning wedding gown in her arms. “Your groom was kind enough to provide this for you,” she said with a smile. Jennifer took the gown away from her mother, feeling a wave of anger over her. This was her punishment, her sentence for life for committing no crime. She got dressed quickly, the anger and sadness growing inside her each minute. Jennifer's thoughts were all jumbled up as they left the house and headed to the church. She continued to check her phone, hoping that David would call and come rescue her from this misery, but the phone remained silent and reality settled heavily on her shoulders. She was getting married to a ruthless billionaire, a man she only knew from rumors. As she took her place on the altar, she realized that there was no going back. She was held bound in this situation and there was nothing she could do to free herself. Jennifer stood at the altar, her eyes fixed on the door, hoping that David would burst in and take her away, but as time went on, she realized that he wasn't coming. The priest cleared his throat, drawing her attention back to the real world. “Do you Miss Jennifer take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” He asked, but her mind was blank. She then felt her father's hand on hers, a silent please to say yes. She looked over at her mom, who gave her a small, sad smile as she remembered her words, “We make sacrifices for the ones we love.” She loved her family dearly, even if she was forced to do this. With a deep breath, Jennifer turned over to face Stanley. He looked at her expectantly, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. At that moment, she realized this was her new life, no going back, no escape. She took a deep breath and said “Yes”, her voice barely above a whisper. A sigh of relief swept through the crowd and her husband pulled her close for a kiss. Jennifer closed her eyes, trying to ignore the vacuum that was in her heart. This was her new reality, her new life and she would have to find a way for it to work, to find happiness in this new dark life. Jennifer then settled into the car with her new husband on their way to his mansion. The atmosphere was filled with awkward silence as he lit up a cigarette. Stanley suddenly turned over to her, offering a pack of cigarettes. “Do you smoke?” He asked, his voice sharp. Jennifer shook her head and answered, “No I don't smoke.” His expression hardened, as he took the pack of cigarettes away, saying “Fine, I do not like women who smoke anyway.” Jennifer stared at him in disgust, her anger beginning to rise. “Why did you offer me one, then? She asked, her voice tight. Stanley took a drag of the cigarette, not paying any attention to her as he blew the smoke out of the window, not explaining. “Why did you then get married to me if you're going to treat me like a ghost?” She asked out of nowhere.
