Chapter 6: Teeth in the Dark

600 Words
POV: Kael Draven The moment the corrupted wolves emerged from the trees, Kael was already shifting. Bones snapped. Muscles expanded. Black fur tore through his skin. He landed in his Alpha form with a roar that shook the ground. But these weren’t normal enemies. They were faster. Smarter. As Kael lunged at the first beast, its eyes gleamed with unnatural intelligence—and it dodged. That had never happened before. Around the ritual circle, warriors from both Blackthorn and Mooncrest sprang into action. Seraphina remained at the center, her eyes glowing as she chanted the final part of the unity vow—desperate to finish the bond before it was broken by force. “Kael!” Ryker shouted as a corrupted wolf pounced from the cliffside. Kael twisted in midair and slammed it down. His claws tore into its flesh—but the wound sealed almost instantly. They were evolving. A howl echoed from the forest—a deeper, ancient sound that made every wolf stop cold. Kael’s blood turned to ice. Something else had come through. ⸻ POV: Seraphina Vale She saw it before anyone else did. Rising from the trees like smoke given form, a monstrous shadow took shape. Two eyes opened in the void—red, rimmed in silver. The Abyssbound had sent a fragment of itself. Not its full body—but a shard of sentience. Enough to test their defenses. Enough to destroy them if the bond wasn’t completed. Seraphina raised her hands to the heavens. “Moon, bear witness. Flame, answer me. I seal this vow with fire and blood!” The wind howled, magic surged—and the circle ignited with searing light. She felt Kael’s soul meet hers. Their hearts pulsed in tandem. The bond snapped tight like a chain forged in the stars. And when the Abyssbound shard lunged— Kael intercepted it with a roar of defiance. The battle left the clearing scorched and scarred. Dozens of corrupted beasts had fallen, their bodies vanishing into black smoke once defeated. But the damage was done. Many warriors had died. And not all packs had held the line. Redfang had betrayed them. Kael stood over one of the slain scouts, the crest of Redfang burned into the soldier’s chest armor. Rage bubbled beneath his skin. “They were never going to unite,” Ryker muttered beside him. “They saw this war as a chance to rise.” “They won’t rise,” Kael growled. “They’ll burn.” Back at the fortress, Seraphina treated the wounded with hollow eyes. Each life lost pulled at her soul. And worse, she knew something now she hadn’t told Kael. The bond had worked. But it had also awakened something inside her. A second pulse. She was now the third seal. ⸻ POV: Seraphina Vale That night, as Kael slept beside her—his body warm, his heartbeat steady—Seraphina stood at the balcony, staring up at the stars. She heard a voice behind her. Not Kael’s. Her mother’s. “You have to tell him.” Seraphina didn’t turn around. “He has enough to carry.” “He carries the second seal. If he dies, the Abyssbound breaks free. But if you die now—both seals fall. You’re more than his Luna. You’re the tether holding the gate shut.” Seraphina closed her eyes. “Then I won’t die.” “You don’t know what’s coming.” “I don’t care.” Behind her, Kael stirred. And Seraphina prayed he would never have to choose between saving her and saving the world.
