Chapter 9: Ashes of Loyalty

713 Words
POV: Ryker Vale The fires had been put out, but the damage lingered—burned into stone and scar. Ryker walked the ruined courtyard, his chest heavy, his heart unsure. He had sworn loyalty to Kael. Fought beside him. Watched his sister fall nearly to death in his arms. But something had changed in her. In both of them. Ryker found Kael standing at the highest watchtower, staring out into the forest as if waiting for the darkness to return. His Alpha’s shoulders were rigid, his jaw clenched. “She’s awake,” Ryker said quietly. Kael didn’t respond at first. Then: “She shouldn’t have to carry this.” “She’s stronger than all of us,” Ryker replied. “And you know it.” Kael’s fists tightened on the railing. “That doesn’t mean I won’t tear this world apart to keep her safe.” Ryker nodded once. “I’ll help you burn it down if I have to.” ⸻ POV: Seraphina Vale The mark Kael’s fire left on her hadn’t faded. Instead, it pulsed with heat when danger drew near, like a warning. She felt eyes on her constantly—even in solitude. And in her dreams… she saw her mother. “You can’t trust all of them,” the dream-wraith whispered. “Even among your own.” Seraphina woke with a gasp, drenched in sweat. She rose, paced. Someone had betrayed them at Hollowpine. But who? ⸻ POV: Caelum of Hollowpine Caelum walked his sacred grove, fingers brushing the white leaves of the ancient ash tree. His face remained unreadable, but his heart beat fast with silent anticipation. The seals were aligning. The Abyssbound would soon pierce the veil—and he would be ready. He whispered to the shadows: “Let the wolves bleed. And from the ashes… I will rise.” ⸻ POV: The Abyssbound It knew their names now. It had seen their hearts. And it had chosen its first vessel. Not Seraphina. Not Kael. Someone closer. Someone they would never suspect. POV: Seraphina Vale The castle halls whispered. Footsteps echoed too softly. Shadows lingered too long. Seraphina walked the corridors in silence, senses sharpened. The mark on her shoulder pulsed again—slow, steady, a silent warning. The fire Kael had used to save her was not just protection. It was a signal. A flare in the dark, revealing danger long before it struck. And tonight… it burned hot. She turned a corner and froze. There—just past the moonlit archway—someone in a Blackthorn uniform slipped through a hidden door behind the archives. But the gate was only known to three people: Kael, Ryker… and their inner circle. Seraphina followed, silently, keeping her presence veiled. What she found chilled her. The secret chamber held scrolls of forbidden magic—maps marked with Abyss sigils—and a dagger with her name etched into the blade. And standing over it all… was Lyra. ⸻ POV: Lyra Lyra hadn’t meant for it to go this far. But fear was a powerful thing. After Redfang fell, the Abyssbound offered her a promise: Power without pain. Honor without blood. A future with Kael—if only she broke the bond. She never expected to be caught. But as she turned and found Seraphina in the doorway, her heart sank. “You weren’t supposed to be here,” Lyra said softly. Seraphina’s voice was cold. “You were going to kill me.” “I was going to set him free.” “That wasn’t your choice.” Lyra lunged—fast, trained—but Seraphina was faster now. Her fire surged through her hands, deflecting the blow, burning the dagger from Lyra’s grip. But she hesitated. She didn’t strike back. Because deep down, Seraphina saw the broken girl beneath the betrayal. Kael arrived moments later—and he didn’t hesitate. One strike. One broken bond. Lyra collapsed, unconscious but alive. “Why?” Kael whispered. Seraphina touched his arm gently. “Because love twisted is still love. She just… lost her way.” ⸻ POV: Abyssbound It laughed. It had lost a pawn. But in return, it had found something far more valuable. Seraphina’s mercy. Mercy… was a weakness. And the Abyss would use it well.
