Twenty-Eight The Best Laid PlansMy racing heart woke me. “Stop!” I whispered and laced my fingers behind the back of my head, pressing my forearms against my ears. The thumping grew louder with each troubling thought as I rocked back and forth in the dark. It's okay, sh, Mom and Dad will find me. A long deep inhale filled my lungs then slowly escaped from my pursed lips. The pounding intensified. I will get out of here. I chanted inside my head as I paced the room. Tingles travelled over my body; adrenaline coursed through my veins. A scream rose to my lips, but I did not let any sound escape. The pacing helped my agitated body but did nothing to quiet my heart. Plunking down on the cushions, I closed my eyes. Slow down, I begged my heart, fearing it would explode at any second. Sh! Sh
