Chapter 3: A Hidden Truth
Rory and Max's conversation lingered in her mind long after their walk. She couldn't shake off the feeling that there was more to her family's story than she knew. Determined to uncover the truth, she decided to visit her estranged mother, who was living in a nearby town.
As she arrived at her mother's cozy cottage, Rory felt a mix of emotions: anxiety, curiosity, and a hint of hope. Her mother, Elizabeth, welcomed her with a warm smile, and they sat down in the garden, surrounded by vibrant flowers.
"Mother, I need to ask you something," Rory said, her voice gentle but firm. "What happened between you and Dad? Why did you two drift apart?"
Elizabeth's expression turned solemn, and she hesitated before speaking. "Rory, it's complicated. Your father and I... we made mistakes. We were young and selfish, and our marriage suffered. But there's more to it than that."
Rory leaned in, her heart racing. "What do you mean?"
Elizabeth took a deep breath. "Your father had an affair, Rory. It was a painful time, and I couldn't forgive him. We stayed together for your sake, but the love was gone."
Rory felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She had suspected infidelity, but hearing it from her mother's lips made it real.
"I'm so sorry, Mother," she said, tears welling up. "I had no idea."
Elizabeth reached out and took Rory's hand. "I'm sorry too, dear. Sorry that you had to grow up with such pain and uncertainty. But I want you to know that I've always loved you, and I'm proud of the strong, beautiful woman you've become."
As they hugged, Rory felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She realized that understanding the past didn't change it, but it could help her move forward.
