Surprise!

951 Words
“Oh love, she’s busy with something at the moment,” Dad said, “so she asked me to pick you up instead, since I didn’t have any patients to attend to today.” That answer satisfied me—Mom was usually the one with more free time, while Dad was always caught up at the hospital. That’s why I called her instead of him. We got home, and Dad dropped me off on the porch while he went to park in the garage. He offered to bring my bags upstairs, and I gratefully agreed. As soon as I opened the front door, a burst of confetti rained down on me. Before I could even process what was happening, someone pulled me into a tight hug—it was Vile Mahone, my best friend. I didn’t hesitate to hug him back. I had missed him so much. He was just about to say something when Mom screamed, “Surprise!” Overwhelmed with emotion, I ran to hug her. I had missed her more than words could say. She hugged me tightly and kissed my forehead. Vile’s parents were there too—Mrs. Mahone was holding a cake that read Welcome home, Nat. It was such a warm, beautiful experience, one I knew I would never forget. The Mahones stayed for a few hours and joined us for dinner. We talked about everything—college life, new friends, the places we’d visited, the food we’d tried. The laughter, the connection, the love in the room—it was a heartwarming sight. Later, as they were about to leave, I walked Vile to the front door and said goodnight. He would’ve stayed over, but we both needed time to unpack and rest after our journeys home. After kissing Mom and Dad goodnight, I went upstairs to shower and get some sleep, already thinking about the day I’d spend with Vile tomorrow. Before bed, I called Sarah to check on her and tell her all about the day. Me: Hi Sarah, what’s up? Sarah: Hey Nat, nothing much—just laying in bed. How are you doing? Me: I’m doing super well, thank you! You won’t believe what happened today. Sarah: Oh! I’m listening. Me: My family and the Mahones threw me a surprise welcome-back party. It was so well planned—I didn’t see it coming at all. Sarah: Oh, that’s so cool! I’m glad you had fun. I Face Timed my family too—I was so happy to see them after so long. Me: I’m glad we both had a great time. I’ll call you soon to catch up more. Bye, Sarah! Sarah: Bye, Nat! After the call, I dropped my phone and curled up in bed, drifting off into a deep, peaceful sleep. The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed and full of energy. I jumped out of bed, got ready quickly, and headed downstairs. I was eager to see Vile and start our day together. Mom was already in the kitchen cooking breakfast. The smell of bacon and eggs filled the house, making my stomach growl. “Good morning, sweetie,” she said, smiling warmly. “I’m making your favorite". ” How are you feeling today?” “I’m feeling great, Mom, thanks,” I said, sitting at the table. “I’m really excited to hang out with Vile today.” She smiled and handed me a plate of food. “I’m glad. You two have been apart for a while—you must have a lot to talk about.” I savored every bite of my breakfast. It was going to be a great day, and I felt so grateful for the people who made it possible. After breakfast, I helped Mom clean up the kitchen, then I ran upstairs to grab my phone and text Vile: Hey, what’s up? Ready to hang out today? He responded right away:" Yeah, I’m ready. What do you have in mind? I thought for a second. How about we grab lunch at that new sandwich shop downtown? "Sounds good to me," he replied. I’ll meet you there at 12:30. I smiled to myself, buzzing with excitement. I spent the rest of the morning relaxing at home, watching TV and chatting with Mom. At 12:30 sharp, I headed out. The sun was shining, and the crisp air made everything feel fresh and new. When I arrived at the sandwich shop, Vile was already there, sitting by the window. He smiled as soon as he saw me, and I felt that familiar flutter in my chest. We spent the next hour catching up over lunch. We talked about college, music, and life. I told him all about Sarah, and he told me about Lukas. Afterward, we took a walk around the city, just soaking in the sunshine and each other’s company. We talked about our goals, our dreams, and what we wanted for the future—Vile was thinking about grad school, and I was still exploring my career options in fashion. The walk stretched into hours, and eventually, we headed back to my house. We ended the evening watching TV and playing games like old times. It had been a wonderful day, one of those perfect ones you wish you could bottle up and keep forever. I was already looking forward to our next adventure. As Vile left, and I waved goodbye, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and joy. I spent the rest of the night relaxing, thinking about how lucky I was. As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about the future with a smile. With people like Vile in my life, I knew anything was possible.
