What happened to Vanessa. She couldn't believe that Salma would do something like that. The detective entered the room, his face serious. "Ms. Moreno, we need to ask you some questions," he said. Cecelia nodded, her stomach churning. "Of course, anything to help," she said. "Just tell me what you know." The detective sat down across from her. "Tell me about your friend Salma," he said. "What can you tell me about her?" Cecelia took a deep breath. "Salma and I met in college," she said. "We were both in the same sorority, and we hit it off right away. She was always a little bit intense, but I thought it was just her personality. I had no idea that she was capable of something like this." The detective nodded. "You said you were with her the night before your friend was poisoned?" he asked. Cecelia looked up . "We were out at a all on a table eating, having a girls' night," she said. "We were talking about our plans for the future too. Ms Moreno listened as Cecelia finished recounting the events of the night before Vanessa had been poisoned. Something about Cecelia's story wasn't adding up. "You were with her before the launch," the detective said. "Which time was it?" "It was 4:00 in the evening," Cecelia said, her voice wavering. "I don't know, I just have a feeling that something isn't right." The detective nodded. "We're looking into everything," he said, trying to reassure her. "I'm going to need you to come back for a follow. As Vanessa processed the news of Salma's imprisonment, she felt a mixture of emotions. Anger, disbelief, and sadness all swirled inside of her. How could Salma do something like this? She had always seemed like such a good friend. Vanessa knew that she needed to visit Salma in jail, to find out what had really happened. The next day, Vanessa drove to the jail where Salma was being held. She went through the security screening and was led to a small room where she could speak with Salma. When Salma entered the room, she looked pale and tired, but she still managed a small smile when she saw Vanessa. "Hi," she said. "I'm so glad you're here." "I don't understand what happened," Vanessa said, her voice shaking. "Why would you do this to me?" Salma looked down at her hands, which were clasped together in her lap. "I didn't mean to hurt you," she said. "I just... I got caught up in something and I didn't know how to get out of it." "What do you mean?" Vanessa asked. "What were you caught up in?" Salma took a deep breath. "I'm not sure if I should tell you," she said. "It's a long story." "I have time," Vanessa said. "I want to understand what happened. Please, Salma. I'm worried about you." Salma looked into Vanessa's eyes, and she could see the concern and compassion there. She knew that she owed it to her friend to tell the truth. "It all started when I met this guy," she said. "His name was Alex. He was charming and charismatic, and he seemed like he could make anything happen. I was drawn to him from the moment I met him. He was like a moth to a flame. I wanted to be around him all the time, and he seemed to feel the same way about me. I thought it was love at first sight." "What happened next?" Vanessa asked, eager to hear the rest of the story. Salma took a deep breath. "At first, everything was perfect. Alex and I spent all our time together, doing everything we could think of. We went out to fancy dinners, we went on long drives in the countryside, we even took a few trips together. I thought he was the one. But then, things started to change. Little by little, I noticed that Alex was becoming more controlling. He wanted to know where I was at all times, and he would get upset if I did anything without him. He even started checking my phone and my email. I tried to talk to him about it, but he always brushed it off, saying that he was just worried about me. I started to feel like I was losing myself. Like I was disappearing into him." Vanessa listened intently as Salma continued her story. "One day, Alex came to me with a plan. He said that he had found a way for us to be together forever. He said that he had found a way to merge our consciousnesses, so that we would always be together, even after death. At first, I thought he was just being romantic, but then I started to realize that something was really wrong. He was talking about things that were impossible, and I was starting to get scared. But I couldn't bring myself to break it off with him. I just kept hoping that everything would go back to the normal. It was a strange story, but Vanessa listened as Salma continued to explain. "Alex told me that he had found a formula, a recipe for a potion that could change a person's mind," Salma said. "He said that if I used the potion on you, I could make you do anything I wanted. I didn't want to hurt you, but he kept pushing me, saying that we could have everything we wanted if we just did this one thing. And I was so desperate to make him happy, to make him love me, that I agreed. I'm so sorry, Vanessa. I never meant for this to happen. I never meant to hurt you. But Alex was always there, whispering in my ear, telling me that I was the only one who could do this. He said that he needed me, that he loved me, and I believed him. So I made the potion, and I put it in your food. I was so scared, and I felt so guilty. But Alex said that it would be okay, that everything would be fine once we were together forever. I never thought it would turn out like this. I never thought you would get so sick, that you would end up in the hospital. I'm so sorry, Vanessa." Tears were streaming down Salma's face as she spoke. Vanessa was silent for a moment, taking in what she had just heard. She didn't know what to say. She was still processing everything, and she was trying to understand how Salma could have done this to her. But at the same time, she could see that Salma was truly remorseful, that she had been manipulated by someone who had taken advantage of her vulnerability. In that moment, Vanessa knew that she couldn't hold onto her anger any longer. Vanessa have Salma a bail. As they drove back to Vanessa's house, the two women sat in silence for a few minutes. Then, Vanessa turned to Salma. "I can't imagine what it must have been like, being in prison," she said. "What was it like?" Salma sighed. "It was awful," she said. "I was scared all the time. I felt like I was trapped, like there was no way out. I didn't know if I would ever be free again." Vanessa reached over and took Salma's hand. "But you are free now," she said. "And I'm [11/17, 6:06 AM] Pi, your personal AI: going to help you get your life back on track. I'm not going to let you go through this alone." Salma nodded, and a small smile crept onto her face. "Thank you," she said. "That means a lot to me. I know I have a lot of work to do to make things right, but I want to try." "That's all I can ask for," Vanessa said. "And you're not alone. I'm here for you, and so are your other friends. We'll get through this, together." Salma's smile grew wider, and she gave Vanessa's hand a squeeze. "You're the best friend I could ever ask for," she said. "I'm so lucky to have you in my life." Vanessa smiled back. "And I'm lucky to have you in mine," she said. "No matter what happens, we'll always be there for each other." As they pulled up to Vanessa's house, Salma looked over at her friend. "Thank you," she said again. "For everything." "You're welcome," Vanessa said. "And remember, we're in this together. No matter what." When they teach home Ann and Cecelia were there. Salma could feel their eyes on her, taking in her gaunt face and thin frame. "I'm okay," she said, trying to reassure them. "I know I don't look great, but I'm getting better." Cecelia gave her a hug. "We're just glad you're home," she said. "We've missed you." Salma smiled, grateful for their support. "I've missed you guys, too," she said. "I feel like I've been gone forever." They all sat down on the couch, and Salma told them about her time in prison. She talked about the loneliness and the despair, and how she had struggled to keep her spirits up. She also told them about the other women she had met in prison, and how they had helped her through the worst of it. By the end of the conversation, Salma felt lighter, like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She knew that things would be difficult, but she also knew that she was not alone.
