CHAPTER 22

***** The acrid smell of smoke ungered in the air, thick and heavy as officer Leo pushes through the police tape that cordones off the perimeter of drug dealers lab. Flames had danced viciously before finally scummbing to the relentless water of the fire department's noses, leaving behind smoldering ruins. The steel frame of the structure stood stark against the deepering dusk, a skeleton silhouetted against the darkening sky. The world took on an eerie stillness as officer Leo surveys the scene. Flames flickered one last breath, yet somehow, the destruction felt too calculated to be mere accident. Everything reeked of desperation. The aftermath of a carefully planned exit. “Keep those barriers up!” Leo barks, gesturing towards a group of officers stumbling through the wreckage. “Not a scrap of evidence left to chance!” Detective Ling emerges from the thick of the scene, bher brow furrowed in concern. “We've got nothing, Leo. No traces of production, no files, no fingerprints…. it's like they pulled out suddenly, although they pulled out Suddenly, although they meant to burn everything down”. Leo's jaw tightens as he scans the area, instincts prickling at the back of his mind. “But at least the informant was right about this place. It seems like they didn't just bail out for the sake of it. There are some dead bodies that were found in the scene, had them checked, and they didn't die because of the fire. It looks like they were attacked and burning down this building was their last option”. Meanwhile, lurking in the shadows of an adjacent alley, two figures observes the police operation, their faces obscured by the distance and darkened alleyway. Thomas, a muscle-bound enforcer with a scar running across his cheek, leans against a wall, arms crossed and a watchful eye on the unfolding chaos. Next to him, Marco, younger and more jittery, fidgetted anxiously. “Why are we still here? We should've bounced with the rest!” Marco protested, casting wary glances towards the police. “Relax, Marco,” Thomas voice was a low growl, firm yet measured. “Boss going to want to know exactly what the cops have on us. If they don't find anything tonight, they'll be back and we need to know how close they really are”. “But what if they catch us?” Marco's widens, trying to suppress his unease. “You know what happened last time when some of our men were caught. We can't afford to end up like them”. Thomas claps a thick hand on Marco's shoulder, squeezing. “Those men were people like you, boss had them eliminated in prison when they tried to rat us out. So stop freaking out! We gather Intel to night, and then we'll regroup with Vinnie. He will need us. Trust me” Just then, a shout broke the nights silence. Leo motions to his team, frustrated gestures slicing through the gathering darkness. “Search every noook and cranny! We might have missed something!” The police officers moved closer to the periphery of their hiding spot, forcing Thomas and Marco to tense. They silenced their breathing, both knowing that the slightest sound could give them away. If they were to survive this night, they needed to gather information without being detected. “Look”, whispers, nodding towards the police. “They seem to be checking the perimeter. If we're Lucky, we might overhear something useful”. Marco nodded, eyes darling back and forth as the tension mounted. They crouched lower, rooted in desperation and the thrill of danger. Though they were hoodlums working for sorry excuses of men, the quest for survival resonated deep within them. They have no choice but to remain hidden, ears attuned to the voices nearby. “You're sure those men are gone?” A younger officer asked as he joins Leo and ling. “We'd better hope so”, ling replies coldly, casting a glance beyond the bamers. “But if they got any sense, he's already making plans to get back in business. We need to figure out their next move”. “Next move? You think they'd be crazy enough to fry going legit anytime soon after this?” The officer laughs nervously. “What if they……… “Enough chatter, McKenzie!” Leo snaps. “Focus on what we can find, and keep an eye out. If they come back, it'll be our job to end this once and for all. Besides, looking at the scene, I came into conclusion that they are not the only drug dealers out there. They seem to be more of them”. Marco felt a shiver of trepidation course through him. The weight of his choice settles uncomfortably on his chest, a reminder of vulnerability inhering their dangerous lifestyle. In that moment, he was uncomfortably aware of how precious their existence truly was and Thomas would drag him into the abyss if it meant protecting his turf. “They're forming up over there”, Thomas whispers, his eyes narrowing as his focus honed in on the duo of detective Ling and officer Leo. “Look out for the quiet guy. He's methodical ; he knows what he's doing!” Marco nods, watching with baited breath. “What's the plan?” Just then, a shout erupts nearby, redirecting their attention. An officer at the edge of the perimeter stumbles, nearly losing his footing. “ There's something here!”, he waves to his fellow officers, drawing them closer to the debris. “ Crap!”, Marco hisses, adrenaline spiking. “ Are they searching that corner? They're not supposed to be….”. “ Shut it!”, Thomas orders, eyes kept wide open. “ We need to stay calm. We can't get caught now”. Chaos erupted, the firefighters had returned, their khaki gear smeared with soot, and the officer's tightened their perimeter. Leo places his hands on his hips, staring down the officers who were snatching debris with glove hands. “ We need to move. Clear the scene”, Leo orders. “ No evidence of anything left, if there was something left behind, it's now ours for the taking”. More commotion erupts as the officers sweeps around, their conversation echoing in brief snippets-frustration, hopes and calculation colliding together. “ Do we have any lead?”, A sergeant ask officer Leo. “ Nothing concrete”, Leo replies, running a hand through his hair. “ We need to find out what kind of holes we can exploit. We cannot afford to let them slip away from us again”. “ Let's see what we can dig up in our network”, Ling suggested. “ I could reach out to the informant; maybe the person saw something earlier tonight”. Thomas’s eyes lit up with the possibilities bubbling in a way that filled him with resolve. “ Did you hear that? If they contact the informant, its only a matter of time before they learn about us”. Marco frowns, struggling beneath the weight of unease. “ Shouldn't we just head back to Vinnie then? Informant can talk except we try to silence them”. “ No. We're here for a reason. If we slip out now, we'll never know what kind of heat the cops are bringing”, Thomas gaze was unwavering. “ We stay on deck and play it smart”. The officers continues to scold one another admist the scattered remains of the lab, and Thomas pushes Marco back a step further into the recesses of the alley. Their movement fell silent as the police officers started to disperse, and Leo begins to lead his team away from the wreckage to regroup, voices still bristling with urgency. “ Let's move” Leo instructed. “ We'll need to re-evaluate everything first thing tomorrow morning. We won't be blindsided again”. As they melted into darkness, Thomas pulls Marco back further into the shadows. “ Now's our chance to slip away”. Navigating through the alleys towards the warmth of the underbelly of the city-a world painted in shades of commerce and danger. They will relay the message to Vinnie soon enough, for the night was still young and the cards yet to reveal themselves.
