Chapter 40 Luke “LUKE, WAKE UP.” Someone shook me but darkness clung. The emptiness inside was a black hole. A different voice. Male. Impatient. “Alpha, the pack needs us. We’ll come back for him later....” “We’re not leaving my brother inside a burning building.” If I could have moved, I would have smiled. Ah, yes, that hiss of fury could emanate from no one other than Ruth. She was right, though. The air reeked of singed wood and fabric. Heat pressed against my skin. Every instinct told me that if I left the darkness I’d regret it. But Ruth sounded adamant about remaining in close proximity to an out-of-control fire unless I exited alongside her. Which meant it was time to finish waking up. I pressed hard against the night that surrounded me, managing to heave my body upright.
