WREN POV

601 Words
The pull hit me so hard I forgot how to breathe. One second I was running for my life, lungs burning, legs shaking — and the next, I was standing in a clearing full of strangers, staring at a man I'd never seen before in my life, feeling something click into place inside my chest like a missing piece I never knew I was looking for. He was tall. Broad. Dressed like he'd walked straight out of his own house to deal with us personally, which, judging by the way every warrior around him straightened up, meant he probably had. Dark hair. Storm-grey eyes that locked onto mine and didn't move. *Mate.* The word rang through me before I even understood what it meant. I'd heard people describe it before — the warmth, the pull, the feeling of finding the missing half of yourself. Nobody told me it would feel like getting hit by something with no warning at all, especially not while I was barely catching my breath from running for my life through the woods. "Dad," I whispered, but he was already stepping in front of me and Asher, both hands raised toward the warriors closing in around us. "We're not here to cause trouble," Dad said. "We're crossing into Ironclaw land for protection. My daughter is in danger from our own Alpha." The grey-eyed man's jaw tightened. He hadn't moved, hadn't said a single word since we'd locked eyes, and something about that silence scared me more than the warriors with their teeth still half-shifted around us. "Name," he said finally, his voice flat, controlled, like he was forcing every word out through ice. "Caleb Calloway. This is my son Asher, and my daughter, Wren." His eyes flicked to me again when Dad said my name, just for a second, and something moved behind that grey — gone before I could even be sure I'd seen it. Then, far behind us, the howls that had been chasing us through the trees grew louder. Closer. My stomach dropped as three Stonebrook warriors burst out of the tree line, breathing hard, eyes wild, stopping dead the moment they realized exactly whose land they'd just run into. "That girl belongs to Stonebrook Pack," one of them shouted across the clearing. "Alpha Drake demands she be returned immediately." Every single Ironclaw warrior turned toward their Alpha, waiting for his answer. I held my breath, waiting too, some stupid hopeful part of me sure that the man I'd just felt a mate bond snap into place with would never hand me back to Drake. He looked at me one long moment. I watched something war behind his eyes — something that almost looked like it was fighting itself. Then his face went cold, colder than I'd ever seen a face go, and he turned to his warriors like I wasn't even standing there. "Detain all three at the holding house until I decide what to do with them," he said. "I don't make exceptions for strays who run across my border in the middle of the night. Mate bond or not." The whole clearing went silent. He'd said it. Out loud. In front of everyone. He felt it too — and he'd just told his entire pack he didn't care. I stood there, exhausted, terrified, and furious all at once, staring at the back of the man my own wolf was already begging me to trust — and I had absolutely no idea that this was only the very beginning of everything that was about to come crashing down on both of us.
