The Rival’s game

The city lights flickered like distant stars as Elena walked through the crowded streets. She had never felt more out of place, yet more alive, than she did tonight. Each step away from Killian's reach felt like a victory, no matter how small. She had not told him where she was going, and she wasn’t sure what to expect when she finally reached her destination a sleek, modern building that housed one of Killian’s most formidable rivals, Leo Vasquez. Leo had been a name Elena had heard whispered in hushed tones since her marriage to Killian. A successful businessman, ruthless and sharp, he had long been at odds with Killian over territory, deals, and power. Yet, there was something about him that intrigued her. He was different from Killian more composed, less volatile. The mysterious stranger from the gala had hinted at Leo’s involvement in the web of deception surrounding Killian’s empire, and she needed to know more. The lavish interior of Vasquez Enterprises was as immaculate as its reputation, and Elena felt a strange sense of unease wash over her as she stepped inside. The air was thick with the scent of luxury polished wood, expensive leather, and cologne. She was ushered through a marble hallway by a sleek receptionist, her steps echoing in the stillness. At the end of the hall, she was led to a private office, the door opening to reveal Leo, waiting behind a massive desk, his gaze locked on her the moment she entered. “Ms. Moretti,” Leo said, his voice smooth as silk. “I must say, I didn’t expect to see you here.” Elena took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "I need to talk to you, Mr. Vasquez. It's about Killian." Leo raised an eyebrow, a flicker of curiosity in his eyes, though he remained calm. “Of course. Please, take a seat.” Elena settled into the chair across from him, her thoughts racing. She knew she had to be careful Killian's enemies were numerous, and Leo was no exception. But something about him had always seemed less hostile, more calculating. Maybe, just maybe, he could give her the answers she needed. Leo leaned forward slightly, his gaze unwavering as he studied her. His dark eyes gleamed with a mix of interest and amusement, as if he found her presence both unexpected and… intriguing. “I’m sure you didn’t come here to discuss pleasantries,” Leo said, his voice laced with a quiet smirk. “So, what is it you want to know about Killian?” Elena didn’t hesitate. “I want to know who’s behind the lies. Who’s trying to destroy him and why.” Leo’s lips curled into a smile, though it didn’t reach his eyes. He sat back in his chair, folding his arms across his chest. “Ah, the good wife. Always so loyal, so innocent. But we both know you’re not as naïve as you pretend to be.” Elena’s chest tightened at his words, but she pushed the feeling aside. She wasn’t here for games she needed the truth, and if Leo had it, she would do whatever it took to get it. “I’m not here to play games,” she replied sharply. “I want the truth, Leo. I want to know who betrayed him. I want to know why I’m being blamed for something I didn’t do.” Leo’s gaze softened just a touch, but there was still an undercurrent of something darker in his stare. He leaned forward again, his voice low. “You think Killian’s betrayal is personal, don’t you? That someone close to him is out to destroy him?” Elena nodded, not trusting herself to speak. Leo exhaled slowly, as though he were weighing his next words. “What if I told you that the real betrayal isn’t from someone close to him? What if it’s from someone he trusts implicitly someone who has been in his corner all along?” Her heart skipped a beat. “Who?” Leo smiled faintly, his lips curling like a predator toying with its prey. “I’m afraid you’ll have to figure that out on your own, Elena. But perhaps I can help you get closer to the truth.” Before she could respond, the door to the office swung open, and a tall, broad-shouldered figure stepped inside. “Killian,” Elena whispered, her breath catching in her throat. Killian stood at the entrance, his eyes locked on Elena, fury and possessiveness radiating from him. His presence in the room seemed to suffocate the air, a sharp contrast to the calm composure of Leo Vasquez. “What the hell is going on here?” Killian’s voice was icy, each word dripping with accusation. Elena stood up quickly, her heart hammering in her chest. “I was just” “Don’t lie to me,” Killian interrupted, his eyes never leaving her face. His gaze flickered to Leo, then back to Elena, his expression hardening. “I told you to stay away from him. You think I wouldn’t find out?” Leo remained silent, watching the tension between the two, clearly enjoying the spectacle. Elena’s mind raced. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. She had thought Killian would be at the office, away from her, but the moment she tried to step out of his shadow, he was right there, watching her every move. And the look in his eyes? It was pure, unfiltered rage. “I’m not here to betray you, Killian,” Elena said, her voice trembling. “I’m trying to figure out who’s betraying you. Who’s using me to destroy everything you’ve built.” Killian’s jaw clenched, and he took a step forward, towering over her. “You don’t need to be involved in this. You don’t need to know anything about my business or the people who want to bring me down.” Elena stood her ground, refusing to back down. “I have a right to know, Killian. I won’t live in the dark while you play your games.” For a moment, Killian’s gaze softened, just a flicker of regret flashing through his eyes before the wall came back up. “You have no idea what you’re dealing with,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “If you knew half of the things I’ve done to protect you, to protect this empire, you’d be begging me to keep you out of it.” But Elena wasn’t begging. She was done being passive, done being the helpless wife. “I’m not begging,” she said, her voice steady but filled with resolve. “I’m demanding the truth.” For a long moment, Killian stared at her, the tension in the air palpable. Finally, he turned to Leo, his gaze hard. “You’re out of line, Vasquez,” he spat, his voice cold and venomous. “And you,” he said, turning back to Elena, “are playing a dangerous game.” Elena’s heart raced in her chest, her emotions a whirlwind of fear, anger, and defiance. She wasn’t sure where this would lead, but one thing was certain: she had just stepped into a war zone, and Killian was no longer the only one controlling the board. “Let’s go,” Killian barked, his voice final. He turned, but Elena didn’t move. She stood her ground, her heart beating louder than her thoughts, her mind swirling with uncertainty. Killian had crossed a line tonight, and she had no intention of letting him pull her back into his world of shadows and lies. “Not yet,” Elena said quietly, her voice holding a new kind of strength. “I’m staying.” The room was silent, and for the first time since her marriage to Killian, Elena felt as though she might have some control over her own fate.
