Chapter 5: Mate

465 Words
Alpha Zeke stared in shock and then in anger. “You knew! All this time, you knew! You knew and said nothing. You knew Ophelia’s child was mine.” Angela responded, a look of boredom on her holographic-looking face. “I swore a blood oath. An unbreakable oath of secrecy until such time as the truth was required. Plus, I am not an i***t and can do math. A six-month-old baby shows up from your mate a year and a half after you marked and mated her. It’s not rocket science.” “And you didn’t think it was required when you showed up here with a witch baby and asked me to keep her for 18 years while you suppressed her powers! You suppressed her wolf, didn’t you! She should have shifted two years ago.” “Of course I did you i***t! What part of danger did you not understand? Still as lunk headed as you were nearly 20 years ago, I see. You had one job. Keep her safe. Keep her hidden from the world and send her to be with the humans.” Angela looks at Zeke, the tiniest bit of emotion soaking through. “Truthfully, I thought we could hide her. I thought we had more time. If she was in the human world undiscovered, she would be safe. I could find her when the time was right. But, with the rise in rogue attacks, I know she isn’t safe with your wolves. It’s clear someone is looking for her. She needs to train if she is going to have any chance of survival.” “Even still! You were going to make me send her away to the human world knowing what she is to me.” “And I still am. This changes nothing. War is coming, and I fear I am not as strong as I once was without the full backing of my coven. She will need every ounce of magic and training she can get if she intends to survive. I will not lose the only piece of my sister I have left. Even if you and her little mate beg for her to stay.” It’s at that moment, Chris, having not said a word this entire time, utters, “Take her. Goddess given or not. I can’t have a witch as my mate. Even if she is a half-breed. I, Chris Steele, reject you, Naomi Kincaid, as my mate and future Luna.” Chris takes three steps back and walks away from the clearing back toward the packhouse. He doesn’t spare Naomi a passing glance. Naomi whimpered. “I accept your rejection.” As quickly as the bond snapped into place, it shattered leaving a soul-crushing weight in the middle of her chest.
