Kellen's POV:
"Bro, we have to leave now, or we'll be late," Alex said as he sprawled out on my sofa, throwing a basketball in the air. He'd been nagging Jax and me for over an hour about heading to campus and wanting to get good seats before the assembly.
I walked over to my mini-bar and poured myself a shot of whiskey to take the edge off. I had a dull headache. My wolf, Titus, has been restless all morning. I hate these formal events. Since I was summoned to Lunar Academy at 16, I've been forced to attend my fair share of them, and I have realized how pointless they all are. It’s just an excuse for the admin to showboat and brag. I’m only showing up for today's assembly for my friends.
This is Alex’s first year at the academy, and he’s pretty excited, so I didn't want to be the asshole and take away from his experience by not going. Although, he is a tad bit overzealous about the whole thing.
"Trust me, Alex," I said, fixing the collar on my leather jacket," You're not missing anything special; the first 45 minutes of the meeting are a bunch of boring speeches from the headmaster and administrators. I turned to face him, smiling darkly. "The real fun starts after.”
There were tons of parties right after the speeches and the boring tours.
"Why do you even give a s**t?" Jax asked, coming around the corner, a towel wrapped around his torso, "You hate orientations."
"That was in high school. This is a completely different experience", Alex defended himself, sitting up stiffly, "I plan to take my studies seriously this year.”
"Ha," Jax scoffed," Are you sure it has nothing to do with all the new ass that's prancing around outside these walls?" he narrowed his eyes at Alex, who looked away with suspicion written all over his face.
I held back my laughter. Alex is what you'd call a manwhore; he has a new girl in his arms every week and is by far the least mature out of the three of us. Alex's only concern was getting ass and partying. I didn’t blame him... that would probably be Jax and my focus, too, if we didn't carry the responsibility of being our race's future leaders.
But don’t feel too bad for us; it's not like we didn't have our moments; it just wasn’t on the forefront of our minds like Alex’s.
"Those aren't high school girls, Alex; they're real women with real needs," Jax said, smacking the ball that he was tossing out of his hands and across the room. "They don't want a scrawny wimp like you," he laughed deafeningly."They need a real man." He flexed his biceps, not watching Alex lunge for him, knocking him into a dresser. Jax quickly recovered and had now taken the towel from around his waist and used it as a makeshift whip to beat Alex.
They wrestled and knocked over a crystal lamp, sending the antique piece flying to the marble floor. They didn’t even blink twice. They continued to wrestle like two rabid idiots, knocking into various furniture and sending random items to the floor.
I rolled my eyes, leaving those two knuckleheads to their senseless brawl while I finished getting ready.
They act like children whenever they’re around each other for too long, which always happens. But I was used to it. Jax and I grew up together. Our families have always been close. His father is my father's current beta, and we plan to keep the alliance going. We met Alex when we started school and got along really well.
Alex will be my Gamma. He has proven himself to be both reliable and loyal over the years, despite his addiction to p***y. He's among the strongest warriors, and he's an exceptional tracker. I'm glad he's finally joining Jax and me at the academy. It wasn't the same here without him. I wouldn't let him hear me say that, of course; otherwise, I’d never hear the end of it.
"Alright, you idiots! Enough," I said, running a hand through my dark hair. "Jax, get dressed so we can go."
They separated, and Jax left the room to finish dressing while Alex sat back on the couch.
"Hey baby," Betty said, strolling through the front door. She was dressed to impress as usual as she strutted over to me, planting a kiss on my lips and disregarding the fact that we aren't currently together, but that’s another story.
"What happened here?" she asked, raising her eyebrows as she took in the room's disheveled appearance.
I shrugged and pointed to Alex, who also shrugged. The maids constantly have to pick up around here, and my place can get pretty messy, considering all the parties. Not to mention, Jax and Alex were the cleanest people, and although they were both given dorms, they have been crashing with me here in what I like to call my bachelor pad.
Being an Alpha and the future king of the race has its perks. One is that I wasn't subjected to a dorm like the rest of the student body. Instead, I had a house behind the campus, a gift given to all the Alphas. However, mine was more extensive and secluded due to my status.
"Whatever," Betty said, losing interest. She turned to face me." We should go, or we're going to be late."
"I know," I mumbled, just as one of my guards came through the front door; he bowed in respect and spoke.
"Alpha Prince, the car is ready." I nodded, and he bowed again and then left the room.
Within 10 minutes, everyone was ready to go. The drive to campus took less than five minutes. We honestly could have walked, but Betty would not have been caught walking anywhere; she was prissy in that way.
Upon entering the school, Titus began stirring within me, sniffing the air like a maniac and clawing at my temples, giving me a headache. What the f**k has gotten into you? I asked the beast within me, but he was quiet as a mouse staring through my eyes at the auditorium doors.
I could hear that the speeches had just started, but I struggled to focus on anything else. Every instinct was on full alert, warning me that something was happening, but from what I could see, nothing unusual was going on.
I scanned my eyes up and down the halls, looking for a threat or any signs of danger, but came up empty. The hallway looked like a ghost town. I took in my crew and noticed they didn't seem affected by the anguish in the air.
Strange, I thought to myself. But I pushed down the feeling of unease and blamed it on my discomfort with social events. We strolled into the auditorium without care, causing every head in the building to look our way. I ignored all the students cowering in my presence. It has been something I've become accustomed to over the years; it used to excite me... now I find it a bit annoying and played out. Betty, however, triumphed with all the attention; a wide smile spread across her face as she smirked at the students, looking at them all as if they were beneath her.
Even Riggins had stopped in the middle of his speech to look at me like a proud dad. I know he was just happy I chose to make an appearance; he has Alex to thank for that.
I took my seat in the center of the room, on the stage, and waited for the staff to bring out a seat for Betty and Alex when another wave of unease washed over me. My eyes searched around the room. Positive that this time, there was an unknown threat lurking around here somewhere. Titus began clawing like a madman to get out, to the point I could barely hold him in...
“What is it?” I hissed, frustrated by his need to act out, especially right now in all places. He has been hard to control ever since...
The rogue?
My eyes zoned in on the familiar yet different face of the girl who has caused me nothing but torment over the last 4 years.
Shyla Black, and damn, I gulped and felt my eyes bleed over with those of my wolf, not bothering to care about the staff or students present. In this room full of people, the only person I saw was
That loner rogue girl.
I couldn't believe she was here...
I took in her beauty, f**k she's never dressed like that when she was in my pack. My eyes trailed over every curve of her body, and even though she was sitting down, I knew they were there. Her breasts were huge, something I’ve always noticed, though she covered them with hideous grandma sweaters… but here, under the bright lights, they sat nicely in a way I never noticed.
A burning fire broke out in my chest; I didn’t like the feeling. I forced my eyes to her face; she was looking around frantically, and her shiny amber eyes filled with shock. They glowed with dread and fear, pulling at my heartstrings. Why did that bother me a little? Usually, seeing her shiver would've made me happy once upon a time, but now I feel... crushed?
"Mine"!... Titus growled and pushed forward to be released. “No!” I hissed at him. I was holding him back by a thread. “You’re confused, you blockhead.”
Clearly, he wanted his revenge on the little minx for her little trick back in Dark Moon. But now was not the time to indulge in that adventure... not yet.
“Be calm. Titus,” I commanded my wolf, “in time, we will get our revenge.” That seemed to settle him for a moment. The speeches continued, and I didn't pay attention to anything being said. My eyes were glued to the beauty who couldn't sit still in her seat, with every fidget, hair flip, and glance at the exit. Titus became more and more on edge...
His need to hunt was almost unbearable, and I knew she would try and run away again, but she wouldn't get very far. I licked my lips. I couldn’t stand rogues; they have no loyalty.
But damn, she didn't look like the timid rogue girl I remember. I couldn’t believe the little rogue managed to get into a school like this… and how did it slip under my nose?
Strange enough, I have had shameful thoughts about this strange girl since the day she left Dark Moon. Since she finally stood up to me in that classroom, I wanted to find her, punish her, and make her submit to me. No one had ever spoken to me like that, not even my parents, the Queen and King. Her blatant defiance woke the beast in me.
I'm not joking.
I haven't told a soul, but the day I unknowingly got my wolf was when I dragged her into that classroom... the day she left Dark Moon after she challenged me.
Her haunting words played repeatedly in my head, like a beautiful melody, an enchanting siren calling out to the most primal part of my soul.
“You’d have to catch me first.” those words became my undoing and Titus's awakening. She was arousing his need to hunt for the very first time. I don't think she even knew what she was doing--- or what she did that day!
She was too timid to willingly challenge an alpha wolf—a king at that. My wolf's lineage is traced back to the beginning of our race. He holds special power, an overbearing aura that she prematurely brought to life, making even the most fearless alpha submit.
She challenged my beast, then ran away from me. Poof gone, like a thief in the night. At one point, I thought I would never see her again, but here she was, fidgeting in her seat.
I couldn’t get her off my mind for months after she left. I pushed myself daily with training, doing everything to keep her from haunting my thoughts and dreams… But, seeing her here... now ... dressed the way she is, it was almost too good to be true. I knew I'd never get the images of her out of my head... I wasn't sure I wanted to. I continued to watch her desire blooming inside me in a way I wasn't familiar with.
My eyes barely registered the blonde man sitting next to her. He seemed to notice her discomfort and tried to use his body as some shield to block her from my view. My eyes grew darker as Titus looked through my eyes at the boy sitting too close to his toy. I smiled darkly; he could try to protect her.... but it would do him no good.
Just as the meeting was wrapping up and Headmaster Riggins retook the stage, I noticed she was on the edge of her seat. This was fine because if she tried anything, I would catch her.
"That concludes our staff introductions and the end of our assembly, but if you could please remain in your seats for another moment. This isn't on the agenda, but I would love it if our guest of honor, the Future King of the Wolves and our star student, Kellen Clarke, would say a couple of words,'
What the f**k? I swung my head to look at headmaster Riggins, who was smiling and clapping, pointing to the podium. When I turned my eyes back to the crowd, Shyla was no longer in her seat but running out of the auditorium faster than I thought was possible; the boy with pale blonde hair followed behind her, yelling her name. I couldn't help the snarl that escaped my lips. Was that her boyfriend? Why did I even care...? We're talking about Piggy, the sleazy rogue who cries if you even look at her.
She was stuck here for the next year, so I had plenty of time to hunt her down and force her to submit. The academy suddenly excited me.
Titus stirred.
I forced her out of my mind and slowly rose
from my seat and walked towards the podium; taking the microphone from Riggins, I turned towards the rowdy crowd.
