I look around the yacht. It's simply decorated with a romantic setup. The lights are coming from a few well-placed candles all over the yacht. A table for two is in the center with a bouquet of red roses placed in the middle of it, with two plates and two glasses of wine. Light music is playing in the background, and Mark is watching me attentively. He’s so gentle, completely different than the one I met earlier in the morning. He pulled out a chair for me to sit down in, so I did. He goes to the bar and pours some red wine for both of us. He brings me the glass and salutes me, and we both take our first sip. He watches as I sip the wine, and I blush. A shy smile slips out of my lips. He smiles warmly back as if to comfort me, and it does. Tonight I’m not getting drunk; I’m already in so much trouble because of my reckless behavior.
"The catering company will be here in a few minutes. They will serve the starters first and then the main dish. I hope you don’t mind. I pre-ordered the courses so we can stay alone. " He informs me.
"Oh alright, thank you, Mark. This is lovely."
Enjoying our wine sipping and sitting across from each other watching what’s around us in the marina and a sky full of stars, it's one of those good summer nights. Our eyes lock, and I begin to enjoy his gaze. I soak it all in, feeling his eyes move over me. From my eyes to my nose, cheeks, and lips, to the slope of my shoulder, then his eyes move to my chest, and I can feel his desire. It's not lustful; it’s calm, gentle, and controlled.
The catering company’s team arrives, interrupting the cozy atmosphere. They greet us and start serving the starters first, such as a cheese platter with fruits, breadsticks, and olives. It all looks so mouth-watering and tasty. I take the first bite of the breadstick with some olives, and Mark takes a cheese portion with a grape. We savor the appetizers bit by bit and the wine sip by sip, occasionally interrupted by light conversation from both of us. The music in the background is as perfect as it can be. The waiter comes, informing us that the main course is ready to be served. Mark chose beef tenderloin with a salad and French fries on the side. Everything looks so delicious and the smell makes me realize that I forgot to have lunch today. I’m starving more now.
The combination of the dinner courses with the wine is perfect, the evening is lovely, and we are enjoying each other's company. Mark and I decided to dig deep into each other's lives so we could know more about one another. We start talking about ourselves and asking basic questions to be able to fool people around us.
Mark is a businessman. He has an engineering firm. He takes old houses and renovates them. He also does construction, building towers, and villas. He takes the project from scratch to the latest finest detail. In addition, he invests and buys shares in different other businesses. He turns out to be a filthy rich man and one of the most wanted bachelors in the city. Ironically, I don’t know him because I don’t watch celebrity and social event news. Whenever I have an event on this social network, I focus so much on the perfection of my work that I don’t notice people there, and in the real world, someone like me would never meet someone like him.
We refill our wine glasses and drink slowly enough to keep the wine from going to our heads.
"Thank you, Mark, everything was delicious."
"I’m glad you liked it."
Mark stands up and comes closer to me. He takes one hand and pulls me up softly. He’s so close to me, I don’t know if I can control myself with him so close. My heart races and my breath becomes heavy.
"What’s going on, Mark?" I ask.
He didn’t say a word, instead, he kneeled on one knee and looked me in the eyes.
It was a matter of seconds before I couldn’t believe what was happening! Is this what it looks like? Our eyes are locked, and I’m standing there mesmerized by him.
He removes a box from his pocket; it’s a jewelry box. What is happening? I thought this was a fake marriage contract! He opens the box, a beautiful ring of seven carats, and the gem features a light pink, oval diamond set in pave diamonds and rose gold. It’s wonderful, breathtaking, and so expensive.
"Katy, will you do me the honor of being my wife?"
The echo of his sound hit the deep-down part of my heart. Everything was beyond perfection; the yacht, the decoration, the food, the wine, the ring, and most importantly, him. He was more than perfect. Am I affecting him the way he's affecting me? I was so happy. I was thrilled. Everything about this evening was overwhelming. I didn’t know he liked me this much to propose to me. Could it be a mutual feeling that was lit up fast? Or could it be love at first sight?
"Of course!"Yes, I will!!! " I shout out of happiness, like a baby girl. I hug Mark unconsciously. He puts the ring on my finger, then he stands up and kisses my forehead.
He’s a really nice guy, he may not be a player as I assumed him to be. I should learn not to judge a man immediately. I should get to know him first. I should learn how to give a man the chance to show his true colors. Eventually, not all people are like my ex-boyfriend, Ted, or we will all end up being lesbians or spinsters, with all due respect to both.
One minute later, while I’m still happily processing what just happened and the perfect night I’m having with this handsome man, Mark watches me closely and attentively. His facial features change suddenly. There's a look in his eyes showing that he wants to say something but he's backing out. I look at him, waiting for what he wants to say.
"Great, now we have a story for the proposal. Once people start asking us how I proposed to you, you can describe everything that happened tonight. " With a proud, satisfied expression on his face and a smile on his lips, he declares."You can describe this fake proposal perfectly as if it is true."
The shock that hit me in the face was enough to bring me back to reality. He's already said that marriage isn’t his thing. I should be more aware that everything he’s doing is fake, his feelings are fake, and this lovely evening was a play for him.
I couldn't believe how he almost deceived me with this gentleman's behavior. False alarm. He’s a piece of bad news and a heartless asshole.
Good choice for a husband, Katy.
