CHAPTER 2: The Arrival

The car didn’t stop. Claire lost track of time. Minutes. Hours. It all blurred together into one long stretch of darkness and dread. No one spoke. Not the driver. Not the man beside her. Not the one watching her from the front seat like she might try something stupid. Her hands were free now. That didn’t make her feel any less trapped. She stared out the window, watching the city disappear. Streetlights turned into empty roads. Buildings faded into trees. Then— Nothing. Just darkness. Her chest tightened. “Where are you taking me?” she asked. No answer. Her jaw clenched. “You don’t get to just—” “Quiet.” The word was calm. Flat. Final. Claire shut up. Not because she wanted to. Because something in his tone told her pushing right now would only make things worse. So she waited. And the silence grew heavier. The car finally slowed. Claire’s stomach dropped. Ahead of them— Gates. Massive. Black. Imposing. They opened slowly. Like they had been expecting her. Of course, they had. The car rolled forward. And that’s when she saw it. The mansion. Too big. Too perfect. Too controlled. Lights glowed from inside, warm and inviting—but everything about the place felt wrong. This wasn’t a home. It was a cage. Just a very expensive one. The car stopped. “Out.” Claire didn’t move. A hand grabbed her arm. Tight. “Don’t make this difficult.” Claire yanked her arm back. “I said I can walk.” A pause. Then— The grip loosened. Good. Small win. She opened the door herself and stepped out. Cold air hit her face. Her eyes scanned everything instantly. Guards. At least six she could see. Cameras. Every angle covered. Distance to the gate— Too far. Distance to the house— Too close. No way out. Not like this. “Inside.” Claire walked. Not because she was told to. Because standing still would make her look weak. And she refused to give them that. The doors opened before she reached them. Someone had been watching. Of course. They stepped inside. And just like that— The air changed. Everything inside was pristine. Marble floors. High ceilings. Clean lines. No clutter. It looked expensive. Untouchable. Cold. Claire wrapped her arms around herself slightly, not from the temperature— From the feeling. Like she didn’t belong here. Like the place itself rejected her. “New one?” Claire turned. A man leaned against the wall, watching her with open curiosity. His smile was wrong. Too sharp. Too entertained. “Careful,” another voice said from behind him. “Boss doesn’t like people getting comfortable.” Claire stilled. Boss. So this was his place. Good. That meant he was here. Her pulse picked up. “Where is he?” she asked. The first man smirked. “Straight to the point. I like that.” “I didn’t ask for your opinion.” A few of them chuckled. But it didn’t last long. Because then— “Enough.” The word cut through the room. Low. Controlled. Deadly. Silence dropped instantly. Claire felt it before she saw him. That shift. Like the entire room had just been pulled tighter. Her body went still. Slowly— She turned. He was already looking at her. Standing at the far end of the room. Still. Composed. Watching. He didn’t move right away. Didn’t need to. Everything about him said the same thing without effort: Control. Not loud. Not forced. Just… absolute. Claire’s throat tightened. But she held his gaze. Refused to look away. He started walking toward her. Each step measured. Unhurried. Like he already knew how this would end. Claire’s pulse pounded harder with every step he took. But she didn’t move. Didn’t step back. Didn’t break. He stopped in front of her. Close. Too close. His gaze dropped briefly, taking her in— Then returned to her eyes. Sharp. Assessing. “You’re quieter than I expected,” he said. His voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be. Claire swallowed. “You’re not what I expected either.” A flicker. Interest. Gone just as quickly. “Most people don’t talk back.” “I’m not most people.” A pause. The room held its breath. He studied her for a long second. Then— “Your father disagrees.” The words hit. Hard. Claire’s hands clenched. “I’m not him.” “No,” he said calmly. “You’re the reason he’s still alive.” That shut her up. For half a second. Then— “What do you want?” she asked. Straight. No hesitation. Good. His lips curved slightly. Not a smile. Something colder. “Payment.” “I’m not money.” “No,” he agreed. “You’re leverage.” The word landed heavy. Claire’s stomach twisted—but she pushed through it. “I’m not staying here.” Silence. Then— He stepped closer. Just enough to invade her space. “You don’t get to decide that.” Her heart slammed against her ribs. “I’d rather die.” There it was. The line. The challenge. Something dark flickered in his eyes. Real this time. “Careful,” he said quietly. “People who say that usually regret it.” “Not me.” A beat. Then— He leaned in slightly. Close enough that his voice dropped, meant only for her. “We’ll see.” Claire refused to step back. Refused to flinch. Even though every instinct in her body screamed at her to run. He straightened. Turned away. Just like that. Like she wasn’t worth more time. “Take her upstairs,” he ordered. “She doesn’t leave the mansion.” Claire’s chest tightened. No. No, that wasn’t happening. “I’m not staying—” No one reacted. No one listened. He kept walking. Like she didn’t exist anymore. And somehow— That was worse than anything he had said. “HEY.” That stopped him. Slowly— He looked over his shoulder. Claire forced the words out. “I’m not yours.” The room went still again. Waiting. Watching. He held her gaze. Unbothered. Unshaken. “Everyone says that at first.” Cold. Certain. Then he turned away again. “And everyone is wrong.” The door to her room shut behind her. Soft. Quiet. Final. Claire stood in the middle of it. Breathing hard. Mind racing. Everything felt unreal. Too fast. Too much. Her life— Gone. Her father— Dead to her. Her freedom— Locked behind doors she couldn’t open. She walked to the window. Looked down. Guards. Always watching. Always ready. Her jaw tightened. “Not happening.” The words were quiet. But solid. This wasn’t over. Not even close. They thought she would break. They thought she would accept this. They were wrong. Claire stepped back from the window. Her mind already working. Planning. Watching. Waiting. Because one thing was certain— She wasn’t staying there. And she definitely wasn’t becoming his. End of Chapter 2
