CHAPTER 3: The Test

1121 Words
Claire didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. She sat on the edge of the bed, fully dressed, eyes locked on the door like it might open at any moment. Because it could. Because here— Nothing belonged to her. Not the room. Not the silence. Not even the time. Every sound made her tense. Every shadow felt like movement. And the worst part? The waiting. Morning came quietly. Too quietly. No knock. No warning. The door opened. Claire was on her feet instantly. A woman stepped inside. Mid-thirties. Composed. Sharp eyes that missed nothing. Not a servant. Not weak. “Follow me,” she said. Claire didn’t move. “Or?” Claire challenged. The woman didn’t react. “Or they come get you.” A pause. Claire exhaled slowly. Fine. She walked. The mansion looked different in daylight. Cleaner. Sharper. More controlled. And somehow— More suffocating. They walked in silence. Down long halls. Past doors that stayed firmly shut. Past men who watched her like she was already a problem. Good. Let them think that. They stopped at a set of double doors. The woman turned to her. “Inside.” Claire crossed her arms. “What is this?” “A lesson.” That was all she said before opening the door. Claire stepped in. And stopped. It wasn’t what she expected. No weapons. No torture devices. No chaos. Just a large, open room. Minimal. Controlled. And him. Standing near the window like he had all the time in the world. Of course, he did. He turned slightly when she entered. Not surprised. Not impressed. Just… aware. “Leave us,” he said. The door shut behind her. Now it was just them. Claire didn’t move further in. “I’m not here to play games.” His gaze flicked to her. “Everything here is a game,” he said calmly. “I don’t play.” “You already are.” Her jaw tightened. “I want to leave.” “No.” Simple. Final. Like it wasn’t even worth discussing. Claire took a step forward. “You don’t get to just—” “Stop.” Her body reacted before her mind did. She froze. And that— That pissed her off more than anything. He noticed. Of course, he did. “You respond to control faster than you think,” he said. “I don’t.” “You just did.” Silence. Tight. Uncomfortable. Claire forced herself to move again, slower this time. “What do you want from me?” He studied her. Longer this time. Like he was actually thinking. “Let’s find out.” Not an answer. A warning. He walked past her. Close enough that she felt it again— That presence. That pressure. “Pick it up.” Claire frowned. “Pick what up?” He didn’t turn around. Just gestured slightly toward the table. Claire followed the motion. A glass of water. That’s it. She looked back at him. “You dragged me here for this?” “Pick it up.” Her eyes narrowed. This was stupid. But fine. She grabbed the glass. Held it up slightly. “Happy?” “Drink it.” She hesitated. There it was. The test. Suspicion crept in instantly. “You first,” she said. A mistake. He turned. Slowly. And this time— There was something sharper in his eyes. “Put it down.” Her grip tightened slightly. “No.” The air shifted. Fast. Dangerous. He stepped toward her. Not rushed. Not aggressive. But deliberate. And suddenly the room felt smaller. “You think I need to poison you?” he asked quietly. Claire didn’t answer. Didn’t back down either. Wrong move. In one smooth motion— He took the glass from her. Set it down. And stepped closer. Too close. Her breath hitched. “You’re not important enough for that,” he said. The words hit harder than anything else so far. Not anger. Not shouting. Just truth. Cold and cutting. Claire swallowed hard—but held his gaze. “Then what is this?” she asked. “A test.” “I’m not your experiment.” “No,” he said calmly. “You’re a liability.” That stung. And he knew it. “You question everything,” he continued. “You resist everything.” “And that’s a problem?” “It is if you want to survive here.” Claire let out a small, humorless laugh. “I’m not planning to stay.” His expression didn’t change. “You don’t have a plan.” That hit too close. “You don’t know that.” “I do.” A beat. Then— “Because if you did,” he continued, “you wouldn’t be standing exactly where I expect you to be.” Silence. Heavy. Accurate. Claire hated it. He stepped back slightly. Creating space again. But not releasing control. “Drink the water,” he said. Claire looked at the glass. Then back at him. This wasn’t about the water. It never was. It was about control. Submission. Obedience. Her jaw tightened. Slowly— She reached for the glass again. Held it. Paused. Then— She poured it onto the floor. The water splashed across the polished surface. Loud. Deliberate. Defiant. Silence. For a moment— Nothing happened. Then— A reaction. Small. But real. His head tilted slightly. Not angry. Not surprised. Interested. Claire’s pulse pounded. There it was. Her move. Her line. “I’m not playing your games,” she said. The room held its breath. Waiting. Watching. He looked at the water on the floor. Then back at her. And for the first time— There was something different in his eyes. Not control. Not boredom. Something sharper. More dangerous. “Good,” he said quietly. That wasn’t what she expected. At all. “Because the next one won’t be that easy.” The door opened behind her. “Take her back.” Claire didn’t move right away. Her eyes stayed on him. Trying to read him. Figure him out. But he had already turned away. Like she was done. Like this— Was just the beginning. Back in her room, Claire leaned against the door. Her heart was racing. Her mind even faster. That wasn’t random. That wasn’t pointless. He was testing her. Pushing. Watching how far she’d go. Good. Because now she knew something too. He wasn’t just controlling everything. He was studying her. And that meant— He didn’t have her figured out yet. A small advantage. But an advantage. Claire pushed off the door. Her expression hardening. “Then let’s play,” she muttered. End of Chapter 3
