Chapter Five: Across the Veil

751 Words
The sea was restless as Erebus broke through its surface. Moonlight washed over him, clinging to the droplets sliding down his beautiful skin. His chest heaved, more from the storm inside than from the waves around him. For years he had dreamed of the world above, but now that he was here again truly here the silence of the night pressed against him with an unnerving weight. He swam slowly toward the shoreline, his luminous tail flickering faintly with a glow dulled by disappointment. Rocks jutted out like blackened teeth, seaweed clung to them, and the sands stretched pale and empty beneath the moon. No sound but the tide’s pull and his own quiet breaths. Where is she? The human girl with beautiful eyes like storms, a girl he have no idea what he name is. He had not been mistaken; she had seen him that night. If only for a heartbeat, her gaze had held his, and the memory burned brighter than the deepest treasure of the sea. But now… there was nothing. Erebus swam along the shallows, weaving between the rocks, his sharp eyes searching every curve of the beach. He dipped lower, then rose again, circling close to where he remembered her standing. Each moment that passed stretched his hope thinner, until doubt gnawed at the edges of his resolve. Perhaps I dreamed her. Perhaps she was never real. with a tinge of disappointment.. he dropped his head. He was ready to dive back into the dark embrace of the ocean when it happened. A sound. Not the wind, not the tide. A voice. High, clear, threaded with frustration and laughter. It carried across the water like a lure, tugging at something deep inside his chest. Erebus froze, every muscle still as he tilted his head, listening. “…No, I told you, I’m not making this up. I swear I saw something glowing. Stop laughing, it’s not funny!... ughh!” The words meant little, but the cadence enchanted him. He followed the sound with a slow, reverent motion, until his gaze found her. She stood at the edge of the sand, a glowing box pressed to her ear, its faint light painting her features in pale gold. Her dark hair tumbled around her shoulders, catching the moonlight in strands that shimmered like midnight silk. She gestured with her free hand as she spoke, her expression beautiful, fierce and alive. And for a moment, Erebus forgot how to breathe. It was her. The girl he dreamt of. The human who had slipped through the guarded walls of his heart and carved herself there without even knowing. He moved closer without thinking, his body cutting silently through the water, until the tide kissed the shore at her feet. His glowing tail trailed behind him, the light betraying his emotions bright with awe, flickering with nervous energy. He did not realize how near he had come, not until her gaze shifted. And locked onto his. Her voice faltered mid-sentence. The box in her hand trembled. Her storm gray eyes widened, reflecting the pale glow of his tail. Eyeball to eyeball. This was no fleeting glimpse, no trick of the night. This really was real. very real Erebus felt the world narrow to the space between them, as if the ocean and the land both held their breath. His heart pounded, wild and unrestrained, and for the first time, he understood why his foster parents had feared this moment. Because now that he had tasted it, he could never let it go. He didn't understand what's going on with him, He kept staring. Eva’s lips parted, but no sound came. Her chest rose and fell quickly, her grip tightening on the strange box until it slipped from her fingers and landed in the sand. She didn’t even notice. Her whole being was fixed on him on the impossible creature half submerged before her, watching with eyes that glowed faintly in the moonlight. Time itself seemed to still. Erebus opened his mouth, unsure if words could even cross the veil between their worlds. But before he could speak, the sea stirred behind him, a ripple surging stronger than the tide. The memory of those burning eyes in the abyss flickered across his mind, and the water around his tail shimmered brighter, as if warning him. He had found her. She had found him. And nothing, absolutely nothing, no warning, no fear could undo what had just been sealed between them under this moonlight.
