DAMON’S POV
The corridor outside my chambers was too quiet. Not the calm quiet of night, The wrong kind.
Heavy. Charged, I knew something had happened before the guard even spoke.
“My Alpha… Luna Nyra went inside earlier.”
My chest tightened.
“How long ago?”
“Not long, my Alpha.”
My stomach dropped. Nyra had no reason to be in my private chambers. Unless— I pushed the door open and stepped inside. Nyra stood near the window, bathed in moonlight like some dark statue carved from silver and fury. She turned slowly when she heard me.
“Damon,” she said smoothly.
I looked past her immediately.
“Elodie?”
Nyra’s eyes sharpened.
“Interesting,” she murmured. “That’s the first thing you say.”
I ignored her.
“Elodie,” I called again, scanning the room.
There was no answer, My jaw tightened.
“Where is she?”
Nyra folded her arms.
“Gone.”
My wolf surged instantly.
“Gone?” I repeated, my voice dropping. “What do you mean gone?”
“She left after our conversation.”
Something cold slid down my spine.
“What conversation?”
Nyra tilted her head, studying me carefully.
“You didn’t know?” she asked softly.
My patience snapped.
“What did you do, Nyra?”
The silence stretched, Then she smiled faintly.
“She lied to me.”
My muscles tensed.
“About what?”
Her gaze locked onto mine.
“She told me she’s your mate.”
The word hit the room like a thrown dagger. My pulse slammed once in my throat. Nyra watched my reaction carefully. And in that moment, I knew she had seen enough.
“You should have seen the confidence in her voice,” Nyra continued quietly. “As if she believed it.”
I forced my expression into cold indifference.
“She’s mistaken.”
Nyra’s eyes narrowed.
“Is she?”
“Yes.”
“Then why,” Nyra asked slowly, “have you been avoiding me since the ceremony?”
I didn’t answer, Her smile vanished.
“She’s been in your chambers for two nights.”
“Because I ordered it.”
“And you expect me to believe nothing happened?”
My wolf growled low in my chest.
“That is none of your concern.”
Her temper snapped.
“Everything about you is my concern!”
Her voice echoed off the stone walls, then she stepped closer.
“And yet she stood there,” Nyra said quietly, “telling me I was living on borrowed time.”
My stomach twisted.
“What did you do?”
Her chin lifted.
“I reminded her of her place.”
A sick feeling settled in my gut.
“How?”
Nyra held my gaze. Then she said it without hesitation.
“I slapped her.”
The words hit harder than they should have, my wolf surged violently. Before I could stop it, a growl escaped my throat. Nyra’s eyes widened slightly.
“You’re angry,” she said.
I clenched my jaw.
“You had no right to touch her.”
Nyra stared at me, for the first time since I’d known her— I saw something like disbelief.
“No right?” she repeated slowly.
“Yes.”
“She accused me of stealing my own mate.”
“She’s a servant,” I snapped.
“Exactly.”
Nyra stepped closer, her voice lowering.
“Which is why this ends tonight.”
A cold chill ran through me.
“What do you mean?”
Her expression turned calculating.
“She’s a problem, Damon.”
“She’s nothing.”
“If she was nothing, you wouldn’t be reacting like this.”
I said nothing, Nyra continued.
“You may be willing to ignore the rumors when they start,” she said. “But I’m not.”
“There are no rumors.”
“There will be.”
Her gaze hardened.
“So we remove the problem before that happens.”
Something in my chest went tight.
“Remove,” I repeated slowly.
Nyra nodded once.
“Yes.”
My stomach dropped.
“You mean send her away.”
Nyra’s smile was thin.
“No.”
And suddenly—
I understood, my wolf exploded with rage.
“You want her dead.”
Nyra didn’t even flinch.
“She’s a servant who dared to claim the Alpha as her mate,” she said calmly. “No one would question her disappearance.”
My hands curled into fists.
“You’re serious.”
“Of course I am.”
She stepped closer until we were almost chest to chest.
“You’re the one who taught this pack that weakness must be eliminated.”
My silence was answer enough.
Nyra’s voice softened.
“We’ll do it together.”
The words made my skin crawl.
“Together?”
“Yes,” she said. “You end it. I ensure no one asks questions.”
My wolf snarled, but another part of me. The cold, strategic part— Understood exactly what she was offering. Control. Stability. No complications, no bond to threaten the future I’d already chosen. Nyra watched the war happening behind my eyes, then she reached for my hand.
“Come,” she said quietly.
I hesitated. Just for a moment, then I let her pull me toward the door. We walked the corridor in silence. Every step felt heavier than the last, my wolf paced violently beneath my skin. When we reached the door to my chambers, Nyra stopped. Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Once this is done,” she said softly, “everything returns to normal.”
I stared at the door, Elodie was inside. Alone. Waiting, the bond pulsed faintly in my chest. Alive. Unbroken. Nyra pushed the door open. We stepped inside. And the moment I saw her— Everything inside me changed. My wolf surged forward.
Mine. Nyra’s voice broke the silence.
“Well?” she said coldly.
“What are you waiting for?”
I didn’t answer, I just stared at Elodie, and realized, I wasn’t going to do what Nyra expected.
