Mason’s POV
I am sitting in my big study. I look at the photos of my ancestors looking down on me. Hunter is not happy. He wants to be with his mate, but I have not accepted her as my mate, and I do not believe I will. I have been burned once before by a so-called mate. I almost lost my life and my kingdom because of it, and this time I will not be that stupid. I will not allow a woman to rule my feelings and my heart. Blake Jackson is a ruthless man, and he will do anything to rule in my stead. He used everyone around him to get to me, but why is he so interested in Harper?
Can he feel her power as well? Can he feel she is not just an ordinary wolf? My mother walks into my office without knocking. She is a great warrior who fought by my father's side all her life. With her is her shadow, Angelica. She is always where my mother is. I know my mother wants me to take her as a mate. Angelica is a great warrior, and she is from the Blackwell family. Her father is Duke Conrad Blackwell. He is the head of the werewolf council, and he will make a great ally to have. However, Hunter cannot stand her and her wolf. I am also not a great fan of Angelica. I know how conniving she can be. She has tried to get into my bed many times. She has only joined this kingdom because her father and my mother want us to be mates.
"Why did you bring a useless human here? The omegas tell me that you even make them call her Luna! You gave her the west wing! I have been asking you for years to give the west wing to Angelica. Everyone knows she is your future mate. You can choose her, and you do not have to wait for another fated mate. She is ideal for this kingdom! She will be a strong warrior queen. What can your human do?" My mother asks.
Angelica smiles at me and acts all innocent. Yet, I have the feeling that she is the one who told my mother. I do not have to answer either of them. They cannot tell the King what to do.
"Harper is the future queen. You do not go near her, and you do not bother her," I say.
I say that to protect Harper, but also something inside tells me that Harper is important. Not only to me but for the future of this kingdom. I can feel a very strong presence in her, and tomorrow I need to summon Talitah. Talitah is an elder who knows how to fight against magic and how to heal wolves that have been cursed. Maybe we should go to Talitah. One does not summon Talitah. You go to see Talitah and ask her nicely to help you, even if you are a king. Talitah belongs to no pack. She has offered her life to the Moon Goddess, and she only listens to the goddess herself. Not even the rogues will dare to touch Talitah. She is the Blessed One of the Moon Goddess. She will know what magic is hiding inside Harper, or what curse. Whatever wolf has been sealed away inside Harper is so powerful that I can feel her through the seal of magic.
"You will not dare to marry a human! I will not allow it. It will be a disgrace to this kingdom! How dare you even call a human your queen? Mason, you are the strongest warrior in the werewolf world and kingdom. You cannot allow everyone to see you as weak because you have a human for a mate," my mother says.
"Mason, listen to your mother. You are feared, and you need a warrior like me next to you. My father is the head of the werewolf council, and you do not want to make him angry and demand that you send me home. I fought for this kingdom. I am always by your side. If I were not injured from our last battle, I would have gone with you to the Silverline Pack. I would have never allowed you to bring that human here," Angelica says.
Hunter growls inside me. I can feel Angelica's wolf respond with a whimper. She does not like it when Hunter growls at her, and she is not as brave or as great a warrior as she pretends to be. She is strong, and she is good on the battlefield. I would say she is one of the best generals there is, but she is not the best. She is not as strong as Harper. I can feel Harper's wolf, and someone sealed her wolf away. They must fear her wolf.
"You do not get to call me by my name. You shall address me as King. I am not your mate, and you have no right to tell me what I can and cannot do. You will not go to the west wing and disturb my Luna and future queen," I say.
Angelica looks at me with shock on her face. I would not normally talk to her like this, but I will have to show her who the king around here really is. She is getting out of hand and thinks she is already my queen. I will not have a mate, but for now I have to protect Harper against this woman. Or must I protect Angelica from Harper? I do not know yet. Tomorrow we will ride to Talitah, and we will figure out what or who has sealed Harper's wolf away.
"Mason, Angelica is only looking out for you," my mother says.
"Tomorrow, I am going on a mission. You will stay here. I will not take you with me," I say to Angelica.
My mother and Angelica look at each other, and I know that look means no good. They have to stay away from Harper if they know what is good for them. I will not allow them to awaken her wolf with anger. I have a feeling we do not want Harper's wolf to be awakened by anger, but rather by trust and maybe, who knows, love.
