Chapter 6: Stay a little longer

Kai couldn't stop shaking. Rainwater soaked through the sleeves of his hoodie while the alley remained silent except for distant traffic and the storm above them. Eli stood a few feet away, unmoving. Watching him carefully. Like he was trying to determine whether Kai would run. Maybe he should. A sane person probably would've. But Kai was too exhausted to think sanely anymore. Weeks of paranoia had hollowed him out completely. The sleepless nights. The constant fear of being watched. The anxiety twisting inside his chest every time his phone buzzed. And now- it was over. Or at least it felt over. Because somehow the truth was less terrifying than the unknown. Kai laughed weakly again, rubbing both hands over his face. "This is insane..." "I know." "You could've just told me it was you." Eli lowered his gaze slightly. "You would've pushed me away." The honesty in his voice made Kai pause. Rain dripped quietly from Eli's dark hair while city lights blurred softly behind him. He looked exactly the same as the night on the bridge. Lonely. Except now there was something heavier resting behind his eyes. Something entirely focused on Kai. The realization should've unsettled him. Instead, warmth spread painfully through Kai's chest. Because someone was finally looking at him like he mattered. Not Kai Vale the idol. Just... Kai. "You scared me," Kai admitted quietly. Eli's expression shifted immediately. Guilt. Real guilt. "I'm sorry." And somehow that apology sounded more sincere than anything Kai had heard from people around him in years. Silence settled between them while rain continued pouring overhead. Then Eli stepped closer slowly. Still careful. Always careful around him. "You should go home," Eli murmured. "You look tired." Kai almost laughed at the understatement. Tired didn't even begin covering it anymore. He looked at Eli properly for the first time tonight. Black hoodie. Cold hands. Dark circles beneath his eyes. "You don't look much better." Eli blinked slightly like he wasn't expecting concern directed toward him. Cute. The thought appeared suddenly inside Kai's mind before he could stop it. Dangerous. Kai quickly looked away. "What exactly were you protecting me from?" he asked quietly. For the first time, something cold entered Eli's expression. Not toward Kai. Toward someone else. "Manager Lee." Kai's stomach tightened immediately. Eli noticed. Of course he noticed. "He's getting worse," Eli continued softly. "You flinch every time he gets near you now." Kai swallowed hard. Hearing someone say it out loud felt strangely humiliating. Real. "I can handle it." Eli's jaw tightened subtly. "No," he said calmly. "You shouldn't have to." The alley suddenly felt colder. Kai stared at him uncertainly. There was something unsettling about the way Eli spoke sometimes. Too composed. Too certain. Like he'd already decided something important long ago. Kai forced a weak smile. "You sound like you want to kill him." The joke died instantly between them. Because Eli didn't laugh. Instead, he simply looked at Kai silently while rainwater slid slowly down his face. And Kai realized with sudden horror- Eli had considered it. Maybe not seriously. Maybe not yet. But the thought existed. Kai's pulse quickened. "Eli..." "I won't do anything you don't want," Eli said softly. That should've reassured him. Instead, it somehow felt worse. Because the sentence implied Eli was already willing to do something if Kai allowed it. The realization lingered heavily in the air between them. Then Eli suddenly looked away toward the street. "You should leave before security notices you're gone." Kai hesitated. For reasons he couldn't explain, the idea of leaving felt strangely unpleasant. Like stepping back into a life he suddenly didn't want to return to yet. Eli noticed the hesitation immediately. Of course he did. "You can go first," Eli said quietly. "I'll wait until you're inside safely." Kai stared at him. Something inside his chest twisted painfully again. Nobody waited for him. Not really. Managers waited because he made money. Fans waited because he entertained them. But this- this felt different. Too personal. Too sincere. And maybe that was why Kai suddenly whispered: "Do you want to get coffee?" Eli froze completely. Kai instantly regretted asking. What am I doing? But then he saw it- the smallest crack in Eli's calm expression. Surprise. Real surprise. "You don't have to," Kai added quickly. "I just-" "I'd like that." Soft. Immediate. Almost breathless. Kai's chest tightened strangely. Together, they stepped out from the alley and into the rain-soaked city lights. Neither of them noticed the black company vehicle parked quietly across the street. Or the pair of eyes watching from inside. Manager Lee lowered his phone slowly after taking another picture. Kai smiling beside an unfamiliar man beneath the rain. Interesting. Very interesting.
