Trauma

Mimi was discharged from the hospital a few days later, but Annie completely refused to let her go back to the house where the tragedy had occurred. Instead, she took Mimi to her own house. Ever since she left the hospital, Mimi had become a shadow of herself. She didn’t eat, she didn’t sleep, and she didn’t speak a single word. The only thing she did was cry. It wasn’t the kind of crying that could be heard—there were no loud wails or gasps. It was a terrifying, silent weeping where heavy tears would just roll endlessly down her blank cheeks. On this particular morning, even her tears failed her. It was as if her eyes had completely run dry, but inside, her heart was bleeding out. Annie sat beside her on the bed, desperately begging her to eat. She held a plate of rice and stew, a small portion scooped onto a spoon, trying to force Mimi to take even a single bite. But Mimi didn’t pay any attention. It looked like she was deliberately ignoring her best friend, but she wasn’t. She was simply lost in a dark, suffocating world of her own. Inside her mind, a voice screamed on a loop: I'm a murderer. I killed them. I cannot become a lawyer anymore. No, no, I can't fight for justice. What justice am I fighting for when I couldn't even give my parents justice? Because I killed them. Suddenly, Mimi turned sharply to look at Annie. Annie was startled by the abrupt, erratic movement, freezing with the spoon in her hand. "I'm a murderer," Mimi said out loud. Then, a hollow, chilling laugh escaped her lips. "I killed them." Annie’s eyes welled with tears as she tried to console her. "No, Mimi, you di—" She was sharply cut short as Mimi stood up violently. The movement knocked the plate from Annie's hands, sending the rice and stew crashing onto the floor, scattering everywhere. "I'm a murderer! I killed them!" Mimi laughed again, her eyes wild and vacant. Before Annie could grab her, Mimi bolted. She ran out of the room, through the parlor, and sprinted straight out of the compound into the busy street. She kept running, blindly, shouting the same words over and over to the sky: "I'm a murderer! I killed them!" Annie was already sobbing, her heart leaping into her throat as she scrambled to her feet. Mimi was running with a manic, terrifying speed, but Annie didn’t give up. Tears blinding her vision, she sprinted out into the street after her, desperately chasing her sister into the chaos of the world. THE END
