CHAPTER FIVE:BREAKFAST WITH SHADOWS

1142 Words
Here's Chapter Five of The Heiress Code titled Breakfast with shadows. This chapter dives deeper into the undercurrents of power within the Kingsley family. Shadows gather not only in the hallways of Rosebridge but also at the family breakfast table—where knives aren’t made of steel but words, and every glance carries the weight of history. Sera finds herself trapped between a sister’s smile and a father’s expectation. --- Kingsley Estate always looked beautiful in the morning—like a son dressed in silk. The sun spilled across the white marble floors. Classical music floated through hidden speakers. Staff glided in and out of rooms like ghosts with trays. Everything was pristine, polished, and silent. But at the breakfast table, silence was a weapon. Seraphina stirred her coffee and practiced calmly, her spoon barely making a sound in the porcelain cup. Across from her sat Eloise, radiant in a pale pink blouse and diamond earrings that sparkled even in the shadows. “You really should learn to hold the cup by the rim, not the handle,” Eloise said without looking up. “You look nervous.” “I’m not nervous,” Sera replied evenly. “I’m calculating.” Their mother, Lady Antoinette Kingsley, sat between them, flicking through Haute London magazine like a priestess choosing her prayers. She was graceful, uninterested, and terrifying in her own way. Occasionally, she’d glance at one daughter or the other, but her silence made the tension worse. Their mother, Lady Antoinette, flipped through a fashion magazine, her expression unreadable. And at the head of the table sat the King himself—Lucien Kingsley. Father. Business tycoon. Keeper of rules carved in gold. His newspaper was folded with military precision, his navy tie slashed across a gray suit, and his eyes—when they finally lifted—were sharp as a sword. “You’ve made quite the entrance, Seraphina,” he said, his voice smooth but edged. Sera didn’t flinch. “Was I expected to blend into the wallpaper?” Eloise chuckled into her teacup. "I made an impression,” she said. “There’s a difference.” His eyes rose. Cold. Calculated. “There’s also a difference between legacy and chaos.” Their father arched an eyebrow. “What I expected was discretion. Control. "You’ve been here less than a week and already your name is on every student feed in Rosebridge.” “And yet here I am,” Sera said evenly, “top of my class, not expelled, and still standing.” Lucien’s jaw ticked. “You’re not here to stand, Sera. You’re here to lead. Quietly. Cleanly.” “Funny,” she said, leaning back. “That’s not how Eloise built her empire.” Eloise’s smile sharpened. “I used charm, darling. You use fire. Both burn—but one gets invited to dinner after.” Sera turned to her. “Why are you really here?” Eloise tilted her head. “To keep the family name intact.” After all, I’m the Kingsley they trust.” The silence after that was thick. Their father cleared his throat. “Eloise will be assisting in some advanced student council reforms this term. It’s… delicate work. PR matters. "Your antics, Seraphina, make that harder.” “Then let her do the PR,” Sera snapped. “I’ll do the revolution.” Antoinette finally spoke. “You’re too emotional.” “I’m effective.” “You’re reckless.” “I’m real.” Lucien’s voice dropped, cold and final. “You will act as Kingsley. Or you will not act at all.” Sera stood slowly, pushing her chair back without a sound. “I’ll remember that,” she said, “next time the world expects me to smile while it tries to swallow me.” Then she left. --- Outside, in the garden, she let the wind slap her skin. It was better than the suffocating chill inside. She heard footsteps behind her. Not her mother. Not a servant. Eloise. “You always had a flair for drama,” Eloise said, arms folded. Sera turned. “And you always had a flair for betrayal.” Eloise sighed. “Must everything be a fight with you?” “You show up out of nowhere, walk into my school, h****k my space—” “I transferred because Father asked me to.” “No. You came because he trusted you to babysit me. Because I’m unpredictable. Because I don’t play with a puppet.” “Because you burn bridges,” Eloise said calmly. “I build them.” Sera’s eyes glittered. “No. "You build thrones—then expect me to kneel.” Silence. Then, softer: “You’re jealous.” Sera barked a laugh. “Of you?” “Yes,” Eloise said. “Because I know how to play the game. And you’d rather tear the board apart than lose it.” They stared at each other. Sisters. Opposites. Flames from the same match. Then Eloise leaned in and whispered, “Aiden’s not yours. Remember that.” Sera’s heart stills. Just for a second. She didn’t answer. Because there were no words sharp enough at that moment. --- Back at school, everything had shifted. Celeste was quieter, but more calculated. The Press Club posted a new op-ed titled “The Power of Poise”, featuring none other than Eloise Kingsley as a guest voice. Aiden was distant, buried in hockey practice and essays. Even Octavia seemed uncertain. “Your sister,” she said carefully, “has everyone enchanted.” Even the faculty.” Sera sat in her dorm room, flipping through her leather-bound journal. Page after page of strategies, quotes, notes, and one sentence she kept writing over and over again: > Trust no one wearing pearls. --- That night, Aiden found her in the music room. She hadn’t expected him. He didn’t speak. Just sat beside her on the piano bench. She didn’t look at him. “You’re avoiding me,” she said. “I’m trying to think.” “About her?” He hesitated. “About you.” Silence. Then she whispered, “Did something happen between you and Eloise?” He ran a hand through his hair. “It was… brief. Before I knew who she really was. Before she knew who I could become.” Sera’s throat tightened. “And now?” He looked at her then. Really looked. “I don’t know.” And that hurt more than if he’d said yes. --- Back in her room, Sera sat in the dark. One red heel on her desk. Just one. A reminder. Not of rebellion. But of balance. And how easy it was to fall. --- Are we expecting more heat and tension? What could Celeste be up to now? Find out in Chapter Six! END OF CHAPTER FIVE
