SHE’D MADE A CUP OF tea and went to the living room to sit with Evan. He was in his TV chair, reclined like the classic Lazy Boy.
“She gone?” Evan looked up from the TV.
Kate nodded. “I told her to go back home. It’s too cold for her to be out at this time. And it’s not safe—she’s only sixteen.”
“So, I guess old man Warren couldn’t keep his belt buckled, huh?” Evan snickered.
“Evan! That’s not nice.”
“You got some other bright idea of how Louise ended up with a sixteen-year-old girl in her house?” Evan was crude in his manner. “I can guarantee she wouldn’t be housing no kid now if everyone’s pants had stayed on.”
