Louise DelaneyLouise started the car and headed for the pharmacy. Before hitting the road to Portland, they went to the bookstore to make sure Olivia was okay and grabbed a couple of ham and cheese croissants for lunch.
Back in the car, Louise drove towards I-105 E to Portland. She’d had a sleepless night—the first since the early days of Warren’s death. She gripped the steering wheel so much that her skin tightened and her knuckles jutted out.
Aware of the silence, Louise turned the radio on and Bonnie Raitt’s voice filled the air.
She had always loved that song—I Can’t Make You Love Me—and would sing to it when no one was around to hear her. This time, it stirred a whirlpool within her. The words wrapped themselves around Louise like a big, weighted blanket.
