Louise DelaneyLouise woke to the sound of the baby crying in the next room. She peeled her eyes open and willed herself to see in the dark, shuddering at the chill in the air that kissed her skin. Reaching for the bedside lamp, she switched it on, and a soft light glowed. Louise got out of bed and put her robe on.
The cries grew louder as she stood outside Kate’s bedroom. It was a good thing that Abby was at a sleepover at Shelby’s, otherwise, she would have woken up as well. She knocked and popped her head in. “How’s it going?” she asked.
Kate was up and pacing the room, rocking the baby in her arms. “I’m so sorry, Louise.” The rings under her eyes grew darker with each night that passed. “Did we wake you? Is Abby up too?”
“It’s no trouble. Abby’s at Shelby’s. Here,”—Louise
