I had to stay home during the first half of the day. Viktor Ivanovich didn’t even object. The locksmith promised to arrive as soon as possible, but—as usually happens—he was terribly late. I had to keep urging the man along. I must admit, once he finally started, he worked quickly. While he was finishing up, I paced around the room. Suddenly, something shiny near the leg of the nightstand caught my attention. I bent down and picked it up—my car keys. Perfect. A smile spread across my face. I had been looking for them for so long. Finding the keys couldn’t have come at a better time. Heavy rain had been pouring since nightfall, and I’d lost my umbrella the week before.
