I spent the entire day feeling as though I were sitting on pins and needles. Every rustle frightened me. Even exhausted and with a temperature still above normal, I pushed a massive chest of drawers up against the door. Late at night, my fever spiked again, and I fell asleep. Morning began quite ordinarily. Strength returned to my body, and I even felt hungry. But the moment I stepped out of the bedroom, I froze. The very piece of furniture I had spent so long pushing against the door the night before was standing in its original place. A note lay on top of it: “You didn’t need to try so hard.” My hands trembled with anger. How did he get in here? I had been sure I was safe.
