An extremely unpleasant sound woke me early in the morning. I threw my eyes open and sat up sharply in bed. The room was already fairly bright, but it was still too early. Then the noise came again—loud, crashing, followed by another bang… and another. Max had said this place was safe, but apparently burglars hadn’t gotten the memo. Jumping to my feet, I grabbed the bat I’d hidden behind the bed on the very first day and tiptoed toward the source of the disturbance. With every step, my heart threatened to burst out of my chest.
