Chapter 11

1225 Words
I wasn't really paying attention to the meeting happening in the room, but when I heard Nyx ask Isaac, "So what should we do, Alpha Isaac?" I snapped my head up. Looking at Isaac, who looked like he was about to bury himself in shame, I smiled. But I really needed to know what was going on. Ashra had said she had never seen Isaac so embarrassed before. I smirked—even me too. Was Nyx doing this to get back at him for me? "I... I..." Isaac stammered for a long time and couldn't say a word out. "So you're telling me that the 40 million dollars that was paid to your account didn't appear on your account books and some places in Ironmoor Pack have gone so bad that wolves have started eating sand and their own pups just to survive. Are you even human?" Nyx roared, slamming his hand hard on the table. The pressure in the room plummeted to negative forty. The air grew thick, heavy with the raw power of the Lycan King. Chairs creaked under the weight of invisible dominance, and I felt the hairs on my arms stand on end. I was shocked to hear about this. So he stole from his people? Well, a man who couldn't protect his daughter... What did I expect? He's trash already. Isaac's face had gone deathly pale, beads of sweat forming on his forehead despite the cool draft filtering through the tall windows of the council hall. "Lycan King... Those petitions aren't true. Someone is trying to frame me," Isaac stammered an explanation, his voice cracking like dry leaves underfoot. "The money in my account didn't go into the account books yet because I was handling the burial and the death of my mate and daughter. They were just buried yesterday." But the problem wasn't the death because the death happened four days ago. Some parts of Ironmoor Pack falling that low? It had been going on for ages. I dropped my phone onto the polished mahogany table with a soft clack and picked up the thick yellow account book, flipping through its pages with deliberate slowness. The numbers blurred at first, but as I scanned column after column, the truth hit like a silver bullet. OMG!!!!!! Holy Goddess... This man was born a thief and he was trying to justify himself? I dropped the account books with a thud that echoed louder than it should have in the tense silence. "If I remember correctly, Alpha Isaac, your mate and so-called daughter died four days ago, but the money hit your account a month ago? What happened then?" I leaned forward, my voice steady but laced with ice. "According to your accounting, all the small farmers and wolves in Ironmoor Pack have pensions, hospital privileges, and free education for the poor, which is good. But according to..." I glanced at Nyx. He said, "Over 600 petitions were written against him." "So according to 600+ petitions, the poor haven't received anything from you, their Alpha, in 10 years. Care to explain?" That nailed him to pillars of shame. He stood up abruptly, his chair scraping back with a harsh screech. But when he opened his mouth, nothing came out. His lips moved soundlessly, like a fish gasping on dry land. I really thought that he at least cared for the Pack, but he didn't. I supposed. What a bastard. The silence stretched, broken only by the distant howl of wind outside the fortress walls. Nyx's eyes glowed with barely contained fury, his massive frame radiating authority that made even the oldest alphas in the room avert their gazes. Ashra laughed darkly in my head. *Look at him squirm. He sold you to die and stole from the people he was supposed to protect. Pathetic.* Nyx leaned back in his throne, his silver eyes cold as ice. “Well, Alpha Isaac? We are waiting.” Finally, Isaac found his voice, though it was thin and reedy. "My King, Lady Evie... there have been... challenges. The pack's resources have been strained by external threats. Rogue incursions, failed harvests. I poured money into defenses, into alliances—" "Defenses?" I interrupted, unable to hold back. I stood as well, my hands planted firmly on the table. The yellow ledger lay open between us like an accusation. "Defenses that somehow funneled forty million into a private offshore account under your name? I saw the transfers. Dated exactly three weeks before the 'tragedy' that supposedly distracted you. And these petitions—" I gestured to the stack of letters Nyx had placed earlier, each one sealed with the paw-print of desperate wolves. "Mothers writing about pups too weak to shift because there's no meat. Farmers losing their lands to debt collectors you empowered. Hospitals without medicine because the funds 'disappeared.' And you spent forty million on what? Private luxuries for your mate and daughter while your people ate sand? This isn't strain, Isaac. This is systematic betrayal". The room was so quiet I could hear my own heartbeat. Isaac looked like he wanted the floor to swallow him whole. Isaac stumbled back a step, his hands trembling. "This is a setup! The money was for—" "For what?" I demanded, picking up my phone again. I swiped through the compiled evidence—bank statements, witness testimonies from escaped pack members, even grainy photos of emaciated wolves foraging in barren forests. "For buying luxury cars while pups gnawed on bones? For vacation homes in human territories while elders froze in unheated dens? Ten years, Isaac. Ten years of petitions ignored, of suffering you turned a blind eye to." One of the senior elders finally spoke, his voice grave. “This is a serious accusation, Queen Evie. If these petitions are true, Alpha Isaac has violated pack law and the trust of his people.” Isaac turned on me, eyes blazing with hatred. “You! You did this! You burned my family and now you want to destroy me completely? You’re a curse on this pack!” I smiled at him, cold and sharp. “No, Father. You cursed yourself the day you let your fated mate kill my mother and then threw me away like garbage. I’m just collecting what’s owed.” Nyx raised a hand, silencing everyone. “Enough. The evidence is clear. The money trail, the petitions, the starving districts. Alpha Isaac, you are stripped of your title effective immediately. Your assets will be seized and redistributed to the affected wolves. Guards, take him.” Two royal guards moved forward. Isaac tried to protest, but his voice cracked. They dragged him away, his shouts echoing down the corridor until the doors closed. The meeting continued after that, but the atmosphere had changed. The elders looked at me with new respect — and a little fear. Nyx watched me the entire time, his silver eyes dark with something possessive and heated. When the meeting finally ended, he stood and offered me his hand. I took it. His grip was firm, warm, and undeniably claiming. As we walked out of the throne room together, he leaned down and spoke low in my ear. “You handled that well. Watching you destroy him… it pleased me.” I glanced up at him. “He deserved it.”
