Chapter 6

Nyx POV I watched her walk into my throne room like she owned the f*****g place. Goddess, she was beautiful. Long black hair with those striking crimson streaks, golden-amber eyes that glowed with hellfire, and a body built for sin — toned, curvaceous, and wrapped in cheap black clothes that somehow looked better on her than silk ever could on my previous brides. But her scent… it was wrong. Smokey. Like brimstone and burning wood. Not the sweet, submissive scent of a normal she-wolf. This one smelled like danger. She’s our mate. My mate, Vesper growled deep inside my chest, his voice vibrating with raw hunger. “Shut up before I shut you up,” I snapped internally, clenching my jaw. The last thing I needed was my wolf getting attached to another woman destined to die screaming under me. Evie Throne stopped a few feet from the throne, chin high, eyes locked on mine without a trace of fear. Most women who stood where she was standing were already crying. This one looked like she was calculating how to burn the room down. “Evie Throne,” I said slowly, tasting her name. “Nice name. But this is my territory. When I speak, you listen. Don’t you dare talk back to me again.” She tilted her head, those molten eyes narrowing. For a second, I thought she might stay quiet. I was wrong. “King Nyx… aren’t you being a little too much?” Her voice was calm, almost bored. “So I should let you insult me, but I can’t talk back because this is *your* territory? Don’t forget — I’m supposed to be the Lycan Queen now. I know I answer to you in public, sweetheart, but I answer to no one but myself. And please… don’t piss me off. I’m really trying hard not to burn this f*****g place to the ground.” She pulled out a chair from the round table in the hall and sat down like she belonged there. The guards shifted uncomfortably. No one ever spoke to me like that. Ever. I stared at her, surprised. Then a low chuckle escaped me. “You’ve got some balls.” “Yeah,” she said, crossing her legs. “Growing up in Thornwall Pack will teach you things you don’t want to learn. Now let’s talk about the contract.” I raised an eyebrow. This was getting interesting. “What do you want to talk about?” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded copy of the marriage contract. I hadn’t even noticed she was carrying it. She opened it carefully and started reading line by line, her eyes looked sharp. “I want your lawyer here. Now.” I didn’t understand what game she was playing, but her confidence was… intriguing. I gestured to one of the guards. “Call Lawyer Lewis. Tell him to get here immediately.” Less than twenty-four minutes later, Lewis arrived, slightly out of breath, clutching his briefcase. He bowed deeply to me before turning to Evie. She didn’t waste time. “First question: What happens to me if I die within the twenty-four-hour window after the claiming? Will they come after my father and collect everything they gave him as payment?” Lewis cleared his throat nervously. “The contract states that all gifts and payments become property of the crown if the bride dies before producing an heir.” Evie nodded. “Second question: What if I don’t get pregnant within the six-month timeframe stated here?” Lewis glanced at me. “There are… penalties. The King has the right to enforce more frequent breeding sessions or revoke certain privileges.” Evie leaned forward, her voice steady. “So if Nyx can’t get me pregnant, that’s his problem, not mine. I’m not some breeding machine. If he fails, he deals with it.” The moment the words left her mouth, the air in the throne room grew thick and heavy. My Lycan aura flared instinctively — dark, suffocating, ancient power rolling off me in waves. Evie’s hybrid aura rose to meet it, hot and fiery, crackling with hellfire and rebellion. The two forces clashed violently. Lawyer Lewis gripped the edge of the table, breathing hard. Sweat poured down his face. He looked like he was being crushed between two storms, his body trembling under the pressure of our combined dominance. The poor man was suffering, gasping quietly for air. I pushed harder. Evie pushed back. For a few intense seconds, her hellfire made the chandeliers flicker. But my ancient Lycan blood was stronger. Slowly, reluctantly, she withdrew her aura. Smart girl. She knew she couldn’t win that battle. “Third question,” she continued as if nothing had happened, her voice still calm. “If the curse fully takes over the Lycan King, do I have the right to leave this place and return to my pack?” Lewis wiped his forehead. “The contract… does not explicitly allow it. You would remain bound as Queen until… the end.” Evie’s eyes narrowed. “Fourth question: So the mating starts tonight?” Lewis nodded. “Yes, my lady. The contract requires the first claiming tonight.” Evie stared at me for a long moment, then asked for a pen. She signed the contract with a steady hand, took several pictures of every page with her phone, and handed the document back to Lewis. She stood up smoothly. “I’m done here.” I rose as well, blocking her path for a moment. I looked down at her, letting my gaze rake over her body slowly. “You have thirty minutes to prepare yourself in your chambers,” I said, my voice low and commanding. “I’m coming to you tonight. Be ready. I won’t be gentle.” Evie met my eyes without flinching. A small, dangerous smile touched her lips. “Neither will I.” She turned and walked out, the maid hurrying after her. The heavy doors closed behind her with a solid thud. I stood there alone in the throne room, breathing hard. My c**k was painfully hard, throbbing with need. The rut was already rising in my blood, burning hotter than usual. This woman was nothing like the previous three. She was fire and defiance wrapped in a body made for sin. Vesper howled inside me again. *Claim her. Knot her deep. Fill her with our seed. She’s strong enough to survive us.* I clenched my fists, staring at the doors she had just walked through. If she burned… I would enjoy every second of her flames. If she survived until morning......... I might never let her leave either.
