FEW YEARS LATER
Kola and Zara got married.
“I got the happy ending I wanted,” she thought, unaware that her life was about to change completely.
One night, during one of their nights out. Kola serenaded her with her favorite song.
Then it happened.
It started with a sudden wheezing, sharper chest pains, and she started to gasp for air, her body fought her harder than it ever had .
He panicked as he called her parents and rushed her to the hospital.
This time it felt very different. Zara felt herself slipping away slowly. She was glad her mother was not there , she couldn’t bear to see her heart broken again.
As time went by, she got weaker, her breaths became shallow, and her eyes were very tired.
Kola stood by her bed, holding her hand, slowly muttering prayers and reminding her of the future they planned together.
Zara held his hands and whispered, “I am glad it was you even if it wasn’t for a lifetime, you were my first love and my last,“ she cried.
Kola broke down
“Thank you for letting me in Zara. You fought so hard and I am proud of you. It’s so silly of me to think I had enough love to keep you here with me for eternity. “ His voice was shaken.
“I wish I had known earlier. I would have been with you sooner, I would have chosen you faster and made more memories ” he kissed her forehead.
Zara fought to stay up to share more moments with Kola.
“You promised you’d stay as long as you could. I didn’t know it would be this soon. Please forgive me for not praying harder,” he said as tears streamed down his face.
Zara swallowed hard and whispered, “You loved me more than I could imagine, I am sorry for dying..don’t blame yourself.” Her eyes closed slowly and she gave up.
Few days later:
Kola stood and stared at her picture and swallowed
“I wish God had allowed me to share my breath with you. I love you, Zara Iremide Kolawole. “
And so Kola continued to live with the memories that his one true love left behind.
Even as life fades, love remains.
