At exactly 6pm, the party began. The MC started by introducing her parents and brother, then called Zara to the stage. Her favorite song filled the room as she made her way inside. She walked slowly dressed in a white vintage ball gown that was well-fitted, with a black pair of heels and accessories that matched her look. She looked absolutely stunning and breathtaking. The guests watched in admiration as she smiled and waved. She wondered how her parents were able to gather such a crowd. Then her eyes met his… Kola!!! Her high school crush He stood across the room dressed in a black silk suit. He looked older and different but still very handsome. The last time she saw him was six years ago at their school graduation ceremony, when life pulled everyone in different directions. She still carried the guilt of not telling him how she felt and hoped that fate would give them another chance. She never imagined the chance would come in this way, let alone on this day. Zara exchanged pleasantries with a few guests, and it was time for the gifts. As she turned, she saw Kola walking up to her with a gift bag. She suddenly felt a lump in her throat as the same old butterflies returned. “Happy birthday, Zara Iremide Williams,” he said as he handed her the gift. “Thank you, David Kolawole Akin,” she replied with a grin. Their eyes met, and they burst into laughter. “You still haven’t changed Kola,” she teased, “calling my full government name like you own it“ Zara said. “says the woman who calls my name like she gave birth to me,” Kola replied, and they laughed again. “It’s been so long,“ Kola said! “Would you like to talk over drinks?" Zara hesitated a bit, she had avoided personal connections with him, afraid of getting hurt or rejected. But this time, her self control betrayed her “ Yes, I’d like that,” she said. They sat together lost in the memories of high school, talking and laughing. For a moment, Zara felt alive and life was worth living. But Kola observed how Zara controlled her laughter, how she paused to take deep breathes and how her hands trembled . “ Are you okay? “he asked gently. “I’m fine,” Zara responded quickly with a forced smile. Kola wasn’t convinced, but he decided to let go. Soon, the party came to an end but something new had begun for Zara. Her hope was reignited.
