Chapter 5: unexpected twist

As Ezrael's gaze lingered on Liora, he seemed to be studying her, his expression unreadable. Liam, standing beside him, watched the exchange with interest, his face neutral. Ezrael's voice was low, his words dripping with curiosity. "You're a clever one, Liora. I've been watching you. You seem to know how to navigate the castle's corridors." Liora's eyes flickered, but she kept her expression neutral. "I've learned to adapt, my prince." Ezrael's smile was slight. "I'm sure you have. And I'm sure you'll continue to serve me well." Liora's heart skipped a beat, but she bowed her head, her voice respectful. "As you wish, my prince." Liam's eyes narrowed, his instincts on high alert. What was Ezrael playing at? As the days passed, Liora found herself walking on eggshells, Ezrael's words echoing in her mind. She knew she had to be careful, to keep her wits about her. Liam, sensing her tension, approached her one evening as she was preparing for bed. "Liora, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice low. Liora's eyes flickered, but she shook her head. "Nothing, Liam. Just...being cautious." Liam's expression was serious. "Be careful, Liora. Ezrael's not someone to be underestimated." Liora's smile was small. "I know, Liam. I've got it." As she turned to leave, Liam caught her arm, his touch gentle but firm. "Liora, if you need anything...I'm here." Liora's heart skipped a beat, but she nodded, her voice soft. "Thank you, Liam." As she walked away, Liam's eyes followed her, his expression thoughtful. He knew he had to keep a close eye on Liora, to protect her from the dangers that lurked in the castle's shadows. ............... Ria's wedding to Prince Nathan of the kingdom of Aston, was a grand affair, with dignitaries and royalty from all over the kingdom in attendance. The ceremony took place in the palace gardens, with the sun shining brightly overhead. Ria was resplendent in a gown of white and gold, her beauty and poise captivating the room. The air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers and the sound of laughter and music. Liora's mother, a kind and gentle woman, had taught Liora everything she needed to know about being a princess, despite her lowly status in the palace. She had taught Liora how to behave, how to dress, and how to conduct herself in royal circles. Liora had been a quick learner, and her mother was proud of her. As the wedding celebrations came to an end, the king, Liora's father, sat on his throne, his expression serious. He called for a scribe to write a letter to Ezrael's father, the king of the neighboring kingdom. The letter was addressed to the king, and it outlined a proposal of alliance between the two kingdoms. The king's voice was low and commanding as he dictated the letter to the scribe. "If you do not free my daughter Liora, I will consider it an act of war. But if you agree to ally with me, I propose a marriage between your son Ezrael and my daughter Liora as a truce of alliance." The scribe wrote the letter, and the king signed it with a flourish. He handed the letter to a trusted messenger, a burly man with a thick beard, and said, "Deliver this to the king of the neighboring kingdom, and bring back his response." The messenger bowed and departed, leaving the palace grounds amidst the cheers and fanfare of the wedding celebrations. Ezrael's father, the king, received the letter and read it with a mixture of surprise and interest. He was a shrewd man, and he knew that an alliance with Liora's kingdom would be beneficial to his own kingdom. He showed the letter to Ezrael, who read it with a stoic expression. Liam, Ezrael's loyal knight, was standing nearby, and he noticed the prince's expression. "My lord, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice low. Ezrael handed him the letter, and Liam read it quickly. His expression was thoughtful as he handed the letter back to the prince. "It's a clever move, my lord. The king is offering you a way out of your current situation." Ezrael raised an eyebrow. "You think so?" Liam nodded. "Yes, my lord. You're being given a chance to marry a princess and secure an alliance with a powerful kingdom. It's a good match." Ezrael said nothing, but his expression was skeptical. ,Liora was summoned to the throne room. She was brought before the king, who was flanked by his advisors. The king's expression was stern, and Liora felt a shiver run down her spine. "Liora, you are hereby denounced a slave and stripped of your status," the king declared. "You are to be returned to your kingdom, where you will marry Prince Ezrael and secure an alliance between our kingdoms." Liora's heart sank, but she kept her expression neutral. She knew that she had to do her duty. A mini ceremony was held to strip her of her slavery, and Liora was given a small pouch containing a few coins and a change of clothes. She was then escorted to a chariot, where she was joined by two knights, Sir Marik and Sir Jax, who were to escort her back to her kingdom. As they set off, Liora felt a mix of emotions. She was happy to be free, but sad at the thought of marrying a man she didn't love. She looked out of the chariot, watching as the landscape passed by, and wondered what the future held for her. The journey was, of course, a long and arduous one, but Liora was determined to make the best of it. She spent her time talking to the knights, learning about their lives and their experiences. As they traveled, the knights told her about Prince Ezrael, his bravery and his sense of humor. Liora found herself smiling, despite herself, and she wondered if maybe, just maybe, this marriage wouldn't be so bad after all. The chariot finally arrived at the kingdom, and Liora was greeted by her family, who were overjoyed to see her. Her mother, the queen, took her aside and told her how proud she was of her, and how she was going to make a wonderful princess. Liora smiled, feeling a sense of pride and purpose. She knew that she was ready to do her duty, and she was determined to make her family and her kingdom proud.
