Chapter 2 Let’s get a divorce

Jessica Davis POV I lifted my gaze to read Bob and the rest of the room. Every face held a mix of mockery and unease. They looked down on me for being such a materialistic woman, yet they feared I’d humiliate them in front of everyone. Even more, they were scared of upsetting Lawrence once he sobered up. Their opinions meant nothing to me. Ever since I was an orphan, I’d learned that other people’s judgments were the most worthless thing in this world. The only thing that mattered was the money I held in my own hands. Unlike the rest of them, Lucy wore a smug look, utterly confident that she would win Lawrence over. “Bob.” I shrugged his arm off my shoulder and wiped my shoulder in disgust. “I wouldn’t even consider you if Lawrence dropped dead. If Lawrence files for divorce, I’ll walk away in an instant. Of course, if anyone is jealous of me being Lawrence’s wife, you can go tell Lawrence you’re dying for that title.” I laughed, casting a casual glance toward Lucy. “Miss Smith, what do you think?” Lucy’s brows drew together. She seemed shocked that I would give up my marriage to Lawrence so easily. To everyone present, Lawrence was undoubtedly a catch — wealthy, handsome, charming, and he’d never been with anyone but me. After a brief pause, she spoke in a sneering tone. “Mrs. Davis, Lawrence is such a remarkable man. I find it hard to believe you’d throw him away.” “Maybe so.” I gave a soft chuckle, brushing my finger over the diamond ring on my right‑hand ring finger. “No matter what anyone else thinks, I’m still Mrs. Davis for now.” Provoked by my provocation, one girl stepped forward sharply. “Jessica, you’re nothing but a slut! Everyone knows you trapped Lawrence by flaunting yourself and copying Lucy!” Then she suddenly pulled out that limited‑edition bag I’d had my eye on from behind her back and held it up triumphantly. “This bag just dropped today. Lawrence bought it for Lucy right away. Do you have one?” It was my favorite shade of purple, yet it now left a bad taste in my mouth. It served as a cruel reminder that purple was also Lucy’s favorite color. “So that’s where it ended up,” I feigned surprise, then stared at the bag with distaste. “Larry mentioned buying this for me this morning. I turned it down because I thought it was hideous. His assistant told me he’d already purchased it, and I’d been wondering where it’d gone.” I put on a generous air and said, “So Miss Smith is fond of this style? Keep it. Consider it a gift from me.” “I don’t want your cast‑off, and neither does Lucy! Take your lousy bag back!” The girl flew into a rage and screamed, hurling the bag straight at my face. I yanked Lawrence in front of me to shield myself from the blow. Lawrence let out a grunt of pain, and the whole room tensed up instantly. I caught sight of Lucy’s dark, displeased expression and let out a quiet laugh. That girl was so easy to manipulate. She’d fallen right into my verbal trap. She was yelling at me, but she’d also indirectly insulted Lucy in the process. “I’m so sorry, Lawrence. I didn’t mean for this to happen.” The girl had gone deathly pale, frozen on the spot, completely at a loss. Lucy reined in her emotions and forced a forgiving smile. She pulled the girl back beside her and turned to me. “Mrs. Davis, you can insult me all you want, but don’t take your anger out on Anna.” Those words sent the already‑upset girl flying into another fit of rage. She lunged at me through the crowd. “This is all your fault! Jessica, you b***h! I’m going to scratch that disgusting face right off you!” I let go of Lawrence and slapped the girl hard as she charged forward, leaving her dazed. She collapsed onto the floor and burst into loud sobs. “Hey, girl.” I squatted down halfway, putting on what I hoped was a friendly smile. “I know you’ve got a crush on Lawrence. If you’re going to fight me, you ought to use your brain.” Everyone was stunned into silence by my outburst. I scanned the room and let out a cold laugh. “Well, are you all satisfied now?” I barely knew any of these people, so I paid them no mind. I snatched Lawrence away from Lucy, stuffed him into the backseat of the sports car, and peeled out. Thirty minutes later, I pulled into our home garage with a passed‑out Lawrence in the car. “We’re home.” I stared at his handsome face, recalling Lucy’s parting words. She’d said she wished Lawrence and me well, that she was genuinely happy for us. I would’ve believed her, if I hadn’t spotted the smudged, sensual lipstick mark on Lawrence’s collar. Annoyed, I grabbed some wet wipes and scrubbed at his collar, yet the lipstick stain wouldn’t come off. Just like I would never be able to take Lucy’s place in Lawrence’s heart. “I love you. Don’t leave me.” Lawrence suddenly opened his eyes and grabbed my wrist. I jumped in shock, yet I fell silent. Those words were never meant for me. They were for Lucy. A sharp pain shot through my captured wrist. I had no choice but to soothe him like I would a child. “Alright, I get it. Let go of me. It’s time to go home and sleep.” But Lawrence wouldn’t let go. He pulled me into his arms and kept pouring out his love for Lucy. Every sweet word he spoke belonged to her, none to me. A flicker of pain tugged at my chest. I’d first met Lawrence at an upscale restaurant. I’d just paid off my student loans, and Grace had invited me out for lunch to celebrate. That was when he walked in. His black trench coat gave him an air of mystery. “Grace, wanna make a bet?” I perked up, intrigued. “I bet I can win this guy over.” Grace glanced back at him, then shook her head at me. “Oh, don’t even think about it, Jessica. He’s the ultimate eligible bachelor. I’ve only ever seen him surrounded by women at high‑society parties, but he only ever cares about one woman — Lucy, the daughter of a top‑tier tycoon.” It was the first time I’d heard that name. And right then, I’d already mapped out my plan to get him. I might have once been drawn to Lawrence’s good looks, but after weighing everything up, I’d had only one goal: win Lawrence over by playing the part of Lucy, and in return, secure a fortune. In less than two months, I’d become Mrs. Davis. On our wedding night, he’d been just as wasted as he was tonight, mistaking me for Lucy all the same. Back then, I’d been thrilled my plan had worked, proud of how clever I’d been. But now, I was starting to feel… jealousy?! His cold hands landed on my chest, and I snapped fully awake, jolted into awareness of that unexpected emotion. I’d actually developed feelings for the man I’d only ever targeted. This wasn’t supposed to happen. I held up my hand to stop his thin lips from pressing against mine. Staring into his hazy, yet still sharp green eyes, I knew it was time to say goodbye to my steady cash cow. “Lawrence, let’s get a divorce.”
