Chapter 11: Mine.

1630 Words
The next morning. The council room was still ringing with Elder Moren’s shouting when Kael slammed the door. He didn’t say a word. He just grabbed Lyra’s hand and pulled. “Kael—” “Not here.” His grip was warm. Too warm. His fingers laced through hers like he was afraid she’d run. He dragged her through the halls, past soldiers who immediately looked away. Past maids who curtsied and then whispered. _Queen._ That’s what they were whispering. Lyra wanted to sink into the floor. 7 days ago she was garbage on the road. Today half a kingdom was calling her queen because of one sentence. They stopped at his chambers. The big oak doors closed with a thud that sounded final. Like a cell. Or a promise. …… The room was warm. Fire in the hearth. His smell everywhere - snow, leather, and something dark. Cedar and blood and winter. Kael let go of her hand. “You shouldn’t have done that,” he said. His back was to her. Shoulders tense under his black shirt. Lyra flinched. “Done what?” “Called me yours.” His voice was rough. Scraped raw. “In front of everyone. In front of him.” Lyra’s heart dropped. “You’re mad?” Kael turned. And gods. His silver eyes were wild. Chest rising and falling. Like he’d been running. Like he’d been holding his breath for hours. “Mad?” He laughed. No humor. Just disbelief. “Lyra, I’ve spent 10 years making sure no one could touch me. No council, no woman, no mate. I built walls. Real ones and the kind in here.” He tapped his chest. “And you walk in with bruises and eyes too big and say three words and now half my kingdom wants you dead.” He took a step forward. The firelight caught the scar on his jaw. “I’m not mad.” Another step. Now there was only 3 feet between them. “I’m terrified.” Lyra backed up until her legs hit the bed. The mattress dipped. “Of me?” “Of what I’ll do to anyone who hurts you.” Kael’s voice dropped. “Of what I’m already thinking about doing to Darius.” The air went thick. Heavy. Kael was right in front of her now. He didn’t touch her. But his hand lifted. Hovered an inch from her cheek. She could feel the heat of him. “Do you understand what you did today?” he asked, voice low. Rough. “You chose me. Publicly. You tied yourself to a monster.” “You’re not a monster.” “I killed 40 men last winter,” he said quietly. “Men with families. And I slept fine. And I’d kill 400 more if they looked at you wrong.” His thumb finally brushed her cheekbone. Just the lightest touch. Where Darius used to leave fingerprints. “You’re shaking,” he murmured. “It’s cold.” “You’re lying.” His thumb moved to her jaw. Tilted her face up. His hand was big. Calloused. It should’ve felt wrong. It didn’t. “Look at me, little ghost.” She did. Up into those silver eyes that had seen too much war. “Did he ever touch you like this?” Kael asked. The question was soft. But it cut deeper than any sword. “Gentle. Like you mattered.” Lyra shook her head. Her throat was too tight to speak. “Good.” Kael’s jaw clenched. A muscle ticked. “Because I’m going to ruin you for anyone else. I’m going to kiss you and touch you and say your name until the only hands you want on you are mine.” The words should’ve scared her. They should’ve made her run. Instead, heat pooled low in her stomach. Her breath hitched. “Kael—” “Shh.” He dropped his hand like he’d been burned. Like he’d said too much. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t— You just got free. The last thing you need is another alpha telling you what to do. Telling you who to be.” He turned and walked to the window. Put distance between them. 6 feet. A mile. Lyra stared at his back. The broad shoulders. The way his hands were fisted at his sides. White knuckles. He was holding himself back. For her. A king who could level armies was scared of scaring her. And something in her broke. And healed in the same breath. She crossed the room. Bare feet silent on the thick rug. And hugged him. From behind. Arms around his waist. Face pressed between his shoulder blades. She could hear his heart. Fast. Then slower. Kael went completely still. Like a statue. Like if he moved she’d vanish. “Kael,” she whispered. Her voice was muffled against his shirt. “I’m not scared of you.” “You should be.” “I’m not.” She squeezed tighter. “You’re the first person who ever asked if I was okay. The first who gave me a jacket without asking for anything. The first who called me brave when I didn’t feel brave at all.” She felt him exhale. A shaky, broken sound that hurt to hear. “Lyra—” “You said I chose you,” she said. She stood on her toes so her words were right by his ear. “I did. With everyone watching. So choose me back.” For a long second, nothing. Only the fire crackling. Then Kael turned in her arms. Slow. So slow. Like he was afraid she’d disappear if he moved too fast. He looked down at her. Really looked. At her messy hair. At the jacket that was still too big. At her mouth. “You have no idea what you’re asking,” he said. His voice was barely a whisper. “Then show me.” That was it. Kael’s hands came up. One buried in her hair, gentle but firm. One on her lower back, pulling her flush against him. And he kissed her. Not rough. Not claiming. Not the way alphas take. Soft. Like she was something precious. Like she was glass and gunpowder at the same time. Like she might break or might burn him. Lyra gasped into it. His lips were cold from the wind outside, but warm where it mattered. His hand in her hair didn’t pull. It cradled. The other hand held her waist like she was the only thing keeping him standing. Keeping him human. She went up on her toes and her hands found his chest. His heart was hammering under her palms. When he pulled back, both of them were breathing hard. His forehead stayed against hers. “Too much?” he asked. Voice wrecked. Undone. “No,” Lyra whispered. Her lips were still tingling. “Not enough.” Kael closed his eyes. “Gods help me.” He rested his forehead against hers. Their breaths mingled. “I’m not good at this,” he admitted. The words were rough. “Soft. Gentle. I only know war. I only know how to break things.” “Then learn with me,” Lyra said. She reached up and smoothed her thumb over the frown between his brows. “We’ll be bad at it together.” Kael laughed. A real laugh. Quiet and broken and surprised. He pulled back just enough to see her. Then he did something that made her knees weak. He took her hand. Brought it to his lips. And kissed her knuckles. One by one. Slow. Reverent. “My queen,” he said. Like a vow. Like a prayer. Lyra’s chest hurt. In a good way. Like her ribs were too small to hold it. “Kael, I—” …… A knock. Hard. Three times. “Your Majesty!” It was Captain Rowe. His voice was tight. “We have a problem.” Kael didn’t let go of her hand. His thumb stroked over her knuckles once more before he answered. “What?” “Blackridge wolves were spotted at the border. 50 of them. Armed.” Rowe paused. “And...” “And?” Kael’s voice went flat. Dangerous. “They have a healer with them. Elder Sera. Says she has proof Lyra is still bound to Darius.” The warmth in the room vanished. The fire suddenly felt cold. Kael’s eyes went silver. Completely. No human left in them. “Proof,” he said. It wasn’t a question. “Yes. A bond string. From the rejection ceremony. Says the Moon Goddess didn’t cut it fully.” Kael looked at Lyra. His expression was unreadable. But his hand squeezed hers so tight it hurt. “If that’s true,” he said softly. Too soft. “The law says she has to go back. To complete the severing. Or to re-bond.” Lyra’s blood went cold. The room tilted. Go back. 7 days. That’s all she got. Kael squeezed her hand again. Then let go. He walked to the door. Every step was controlled. Too controlled. “Then we burn the law,” he said. He pulled the door open. Rowe was standing there, armor on. “Get my sword,” Kael ordered. “And bring the healer to the courtyard. If she’s lying, I’m putting her through the wall. If she’s not...” He didn’t finish. But he looked back at Lyra one last time. And mouthed two words. _Mine. Still._ Then he was gone. Lyra sank onto the bed. Her hands were shaking again. But this time, it wasn’t from fear. It was from the memory of his lips. And the promise in his eyes.
