Lily walks into a small cafe located near her university. she greets a man who is already in his late forties. Mr Murphy, the owner of The Daily grind Cafe.
"you are late, what kept you so long?",he asked angerly as he stared at her. "I am sorry, sir",she apologized but he just hissed.
"do you think coming to work late is going to make you earn more?",he mocked her but she remained silent as she stared at the feet.
"just get out of my sight",he yelled. lily quickly rushed to the changing room where she wore the cafe's uniform. by the time she was done, Mr Murphy had already left the cafe. she breath a sign of relief as she didn't want to be yelled at and that too Infront of customers.
she heads to the kitchen where she starts taking the meals and drinks to their tables. she worked hard as she really needs money. she didn't dare slack off because if she doesn't her stingy boss who paid her little won't even mind deducting the entire money and pay her in cents.
The clock ticked until it's hour hand got to seven. the closing hour. Lily walks over to the changing room along with other female staffs. after she was done, she walked over to Mr Murphy who is drinking at one of the tables.
"sir, it's closing hour",she said with a gentle voice. Mr Murphy looked at the clock to confirm as if she was lying about the time.
he grunts as he pulled out a brown bag from under the table. he opens the bag and pulled out a brown envelope. "here take his",he threw it over to her while taking a sip of his beer.
Lily checked the amount that was inside and the amount was correct. "thank you sir",she thanked him. "don't thank me. am not giving it to you for free",he said as he waved his hand to dismiss her.
Lily took her bag and left the cafe. she stood at the entrance and stared at the sky as it turned a bit dark as night was approaching.
she walked over to the bus stop where she waited fifteen minutes for it to arrive. she and some other passenger got in and she took her seat near a window.
she unlocked her phone to check for any missed calls or text message but there was none. she stared at her phone untill the screen went black. she sighed as she expected it. the only people who will call her were her so called family, either to ask for money or just to frustrate her but she was relieved that didn't happen today.
The bus soon arrived at the next stop where she got off after paying. she heads towards her second work place which was a convenient store, owned by a granny.
she walked into the store and saw granny lifting boxes. "granny stop, you will hurt yourself", Lily exclaimed as she rushed towards the old lady.
"wait, I am fine, there is no need to worry about me", granny said as Lily took the box from her. "how many times have I told you to leave all the heavy stuff for me?", Lily asked as she placed the box in it's designated position.
granny smiled as she walked towards Lily. "you are such a sweet child, I wanted to help a bit before you arrive", granny tried to explain herself. "that doesn't give you enough reason to carry heavy stuffs", Lily scolds her.
granny reached out to caress her hair. "I am sorry dead, I won't disobey you okay", granny reassured her making lily smile.
"okay, pinky promise", Lily put forth her pinky finger making granny do the same as she promised granny has always cared for Lily ever since she was a child like she was her own. granny was among the few people who considered Lily as human and not trash.
"okay my child, I have prepared a flask of food for you and also warm water. use it make yourself a cup of tea and don't over stay", granny said as walked towards the door to leave. "okay granny", Lily shouted as she tries to balance some boxes making granny let out a small laugh.
"okay, am leaving take care of yourself ", granny greeted her goodbye as she heads home leaving Lily alone in the shop.
Lily finished with arranging the boxes and heads towards the counter to enjoy the meal granny prepared for her as she awaits customers.
