Chapter Three

1135 Words
Emily     After I officially woke up for the day I felt a bit better. I was still feeling pretty self-conscious, but at least I was rested. Maybe Damien would finally be interested once he’s also had some rest? I was going to take us out for a nice dinner tonight and we were going to watch a movie or play video games together tonight and relax. That’s been a hobby we’ve shared for the last couple of years now, and it’s been nice being able to play together and with our friends. I know this would be a nice night for him though, and hopefully just relaxing over some delicious food and a relaxing night would help set the mood. Damien still wouldn’t be up for a couple of hours, so I decided to get some grocery shopping and other errands done. On my way out I did a quick inventory of what we needed and decided to also get the ingredients to make his favorite dessert; cheesecake. I hopped in the car and went on my way.     The stores were filled with people, making me hurry through my shopping as quickly as possible so I could getting out and have some room to breathe. After crossing off everything I needed I hurried home, realizing it took a bit longer to finish shopping than I anticipated because of the crowds. I might not have enough time now to bake the cheesecake before Damien wakes up. I practically ran through the door when I got home, only grabbing what needed refrigerated or frozen or what I needed for the cheesecake; everything else would be fine left in the car for now. I threw the groceries into their respective doors, not bothering to empty the bags for now. I started on the dessert, mixing everything together and preheating the oven once I was satisfied with the graham cracker crust I poured the mix in and tossed it into the oven right as I heard Damien’s alarm going off. Damien     After hitting snooze on my alarm a few times, I woke up to a delicious aroma. It smelled like heaven, but I couldn’t place it. I forced myself out of bed and into the bathroom, quickly washing off in the shower before throwing on a plain black t-shirt and a pair of jeans I grabbed on my way in. I hurried downstairs and made my way into the kitchen to see Emily washing a few dishes, leaving no sign of where the smell was coming from. She apparently had earbuds in because between her focus on her task and her singing along to the music she didn’t realize I was standing in the doorway watching her. After a few moments, she must have felt my presence because her eyes caught mine as she jumped slightly, not expecting to see me standing there. I chuckled at her startled demeanor as she blushed. “Why would you do that? You scared me!” She was clearly flustered.     “You’re just cute” I said, as I walked over to her, wrapping my arms around her from behind and kissing her cheek.     Emily set the mixing bowl she was washing back in the sink and spun in my arms to face me, resting her arms over my shoulders, careful to not get my shirt wet from her hands, and quickly kissed me. “So, what were you cooking? Something smells amazing.” I said, pulling her closer.     “You’ll see, it’s for after dinner, we have plans,” Emily said with a smirk, “Now, we’re going to leave shortly, I just need to finish getting ready.”     After going back and forth with her, trying to fish for more information, I yielded and released her from my arms, allowing her to step away to get ready.     Roughly thirty to forty minutes had passed as I sat on the couch playing a game on my phone when Emily came down the stairs. With her hair curled, makeup is done, and a skin-tight sweater dress that hugged her curves perfectly I saw her looking at me expectantly, waiting for my reaction. I could tell she put a lot of effort into how she looked. As she reached the bottom of the stairs I got up and walked over to her, wrapping an arm around her back and pulling her closer. “You look great, baby,” I said as I kissed her softly, grabbing a light jacket for her with my other hand. “You ready to go?” She blushed slightly and nodded. It wasn’t chilly yet, but I wasn’t sure how long we would be out, so I handed her the jacket to bring along, just in case. We made our way to our car, with Emily taking the driver's seat. It was odd, her driving and me in the passenger seat, typically when we went anywhere together, I would drive. Although, I suppose it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if she had to tell me where to drive to, so I sat back and relaxed, listening to the music as she pulled out of the driveway and down the street.     I started to realize where we were going after half an hour of driving. Emily did a really good job of keeping me distracted by joking around and tasking me about work, but I realized she was taking me to our favorite restaurant. It was a fantastic hibachi bar, but we rarely came here anymore because of the distance. As we pulled up to the restaurant she looked so excited and I was actually surprised, we hadn’t talked about coming here in so long. I couldn't wait to taste the delicious food. “Any special reason we came out here?” I asked hesitantly, even though I know I didn’t miss any holiday, our anniversary, or her birthday. She looked over at me with a sheepish grin as she finished pulling into a parking spot, “No reason really, just wanted to have a nice dinner and treat ourselves a bit. We haven’t gotten much quality time together lately. I wanted to tell her about Laura today, but it will likely have to wait until later. -     Dinner was so nice; the food was great, and we had a great time. I didn’t realize how much we both needed a night like this. As I drove us home, Emily was just taking in the night sky and looking out the window, soI reached across the car and grabbed her hand, pulling it to my lap to hold. She turned to me and gave a gentle smile while squeezing my hand a little tighter. “I love you” she practically whispered. “I love you too”.
