THE SHADOW MONARCH: ARISE

633 Words
*03:22, The Maw* Blood hit the water. Four thousand throats, opened in ten minutes. The Red Sea drank it and went still. Not calm — _still_. Like a held breath. Then the Maw inhaled. The surface dropped six feet instantly. Hulls groaned. Ships tilted toward the hole where the water used to be. *“Depth charge!”* Finn yelled, but there was nothing to charge. The sea wasn’t there anymore. Something looked back from the bottom. It wasn’t an eye. Eyes have whites. This was all black, a kilometer wide, and it blinked sideways. The first thing to come out wasn’t a monster. It was a hand. Five fingers, each the length of a submarine. Skin like wet slate. Nails of coral and bone. It planted itself on the edge of the Maw and pulled. Water rushed back in to fill the space, dragging two frigates with it. They hit the hand and didn’t break it. They broke. Metal screamed, folded, and vanished under the knuckle. No explosion. Just gone. *03:23* The second hand came up, holding something. A head. Dima’s head. But wrong. Perfect, no scar, no age. Preserved. His eyes opened. *“Kade,”* the head said, using the water as lungs. *“You left me down here.”* Kade didn’t answer. The mark on his arm was moving now. Black veins turned to silver script, crawling up his neck like living tattoos. *[System Alert: Monarch Construct Detected]* *[Quest Update: Kill the Imposter or Become It]* *[Penalty for Failure: Assimilation]* The thing wearing Dima’s face wasn’t done talking. It rolled the head between its fingers like a marble, then _bit_. Teeth sheared through skull. Brain and bone and blood sluiced down its wrist into the Red Sea. The water turned black for half a mile. *“Tastes like you,”* it said. *03:24* The rest of it came out. Not a body. A _city_. Towers of drowned ships, fused together with sinew. Masts for ribs. Propellers for teeth. And faces — thousands of them — pressed into the hulls, mouths moving, all speaking with Dima’s voice. *“Brother-brother-brother-brother”* It walked. The Red Sea wasn’t deep enough, so it made depth. The seabed cracked open to let it through. Kade finally moved. He stepped off the destroyer onto the ice he made mid-air. Each footstep froze the spray solid. He didn’t go for the head. He went for the hands. First swing: his frost blade took four fingers off. They hit the water and didn’t sink. They swam. Each one growing teeth, growing eyes. Finn started shooting the fingers. Rounds did nothing. “These need more than bullets!” he roared. Rook was already moving. He grabbed a severed Monarch head from the deck, pulled the pin on a white phosphorus grenade, and shoved both into the nearest finger’s mouth. It swallowed. Three seconds later the finger burst from the inside. Fire and bone and meat rained down. Where it hit the water, the sea caught fire. The city-thing laughed. Every face at once. *“You’re using our bones to fight us,”* it said. *“We like that.”* Kade reached the wrist. He put his marked hand flat against the slate skin. The silver script jumped from his arm into the thing. For one second, it stopped. Every face went slack. Every mouth closed. Then they all screamed. The sound broke windows on ships 20 miles away. Eardrums popped. Blood ran from noses. *[System Notice: Assimilation Resisted]* *[New Skill Unlocked: Monarch’s Claim]* *[You May Now Arise]* Kade looked down at the water. At the dead. At the heads floating face-down. “Arise,” he said. The Red Sea boiled again. And the dead stood up.
