Lara’s birthday was approaching.
Her sixteenth birthday.
Her sweet sixteen.
And I was determined to make it something she would remember for all the right reasons.
Lara had lost enough.
Her mother.
Her childhood.
And, in many ways, her relationship with her own father.
She deserved one day where she didn’t have to carry any of that.
I wanted balloons. Music. Food. Friends. Something loud and ridiculous and completely normal.
A party.
The only problem was James.
As much as I hated admitting it, Lara was his daughter, and I couldn’t simply decide to throw her a birthday party without talking to him first.
Besides, I wanted him involved.
I wanted him to start being the father Lara needed.
