Heidi Lara’s birthday was approaching. Her sixteenth birthday. Her sweet sixteen. And I was determined to make it something she would remember for all the right reasons. Lara had lost enough. Her mother. Her childhood. And, in many ways, her relationship with her own father. She deserved one day where she didn’t have to carry any of that. I wanted balloons. Music. Food. Friends.
