Elena didn't fail to notice the rhythm the ambulance carried.
Not the siren, not the voices.
The rhythm of movement .
The vehicle shifted left, then right . Slowed . Accelerated . Each motion came with a pattern, subtle but consistent . Her body adjusted to it without effort, muscles stabilizing before the turns fully happened .
She stared at her own hands resting on her lap .
Why do I know this ?
A paramedic’s voice cut through her thoughts .
“ Elena, stay with me . Can you tell me where you are ”
She looked up .
The man sat across from her, pen poised, eyes focused but not unkind . His tone was steady, trained .
“ In an ambulance , ” she answered .
“ Good . Do you know what happened ”
She hesitated .
The crash .
The smoke .
The fire .
Fragments, nothing more .
“ No , ” she said .
The paramedic nodded, writing quickly .
“ That’s okay . You might have a concussion . We’re going to run some tests when we get to the hospital . ”
Elena’s gaze shifted past him .
Adrian sat near the rear doors, one hand braced lightly against the wall as the ambulance moved . He had not taken his eyes off her since they left the scene .
Watching .
Always watching .
She studied him again .
He did not look like someone who had literally pulled a stranger out of a burning wreck .
No adrenaline . No panic .
Only control .
“ Who is he ” she asked, nodding slightly toward Adrian .
The paramedic glanced back briefly .
“ I thought he was with you , ” he replied .
Elena’s eyes narrowed .
“ I didn’t say that , ” she said .
Adrian spoke before the paramedic could respond .
“ You didn’t have to , ” he said calmly .
Elena turned fully toward him .
“ That’s not an answer , ” she said .
The paramedic shifted slightly, sensing the tension .
“ We’ll sort all of that out at the hospital , ” he said, trying to redirect .
Elena did not look away from Adrian .
“ Who are you ” she repeated .
He held her gaze .
For a moment, it felt like everything else in the ambulance faded . The noise . The motion . The questions .
Just him .
Just that look .
Measured . Precise .
“ Adrian Hale , ” he said .
The name landed with no recognition .
Nothing moved in her memory, no image, no feeling .
Just empty space .
“ That doesn’t mean anything to me , ” she said .
“ I know , ” he replied .
Again .
That same answer .
Simple . Certain .
Like he had already accounted for her confusion .
Her irritation rose slightly .
“ Then explain , ” she said .
“ Not here , ” he said .
Her jaw tightened .
“ You keep saying that . ”
He leaned forward slightly, lowering his voice just enough to keep it between them .
“ Because this is not a controlled environment , ” he said .
The words were precise .
Deliberate .Not how most people would speak .
Elena noticed that .
“ Controlled for what ” she asked .
He did not answer immediately .
His gaze shifted briefly toward the front of the ambulance, then back to her .
A calculation .
Always calculating .
“ For a conversation that matters , ” he said .
That was not enough .
Not even close .
But before she could press further, the ambulance slowed .
The siren cut off .
Voices outside grew louder .
“ We’re here , ” the paramedic said .
The doors opened .
Light spilled in, sharp and clinical . The smell of antiseptic replaced smoke .
Hands moved again .
Guiding . Lifting . Directing .
Elena let them help her out, but she paid attention to everything .
The layout .
The exits .
The positions of people around her .
It happened without effort .
A nurse approached quickly .
“ What do we have ” she asked .
“ Female, mid twenties, possible head trauma, disorientation, memory gaps , ” the paramedic replied .
“ Name ”
A pause .
Elena felt it again .
That hesitation .
She spoke before anyone else could .
“ Elena Voss , ” she said .
The nurse nodded and wrote it down without question .
Adrian went still again .
Just for a second .
But Elena saw it .
Again .
Why does that affect him ?
They moved her through the hospital corridors .
Bright lights . Clean floors . Controlled chaos .
She should have felt overwhelmed .
She did not .
Her mind tracked everything .
Doors . Hallways . Staff movements . Patterns .
Always patterns .
They guided her into a room .
Machines beeped softly . Equipment lined the walls .
She sat on the bed as they began their checks .
Blood pressure . Pulse . Light in her eyes .
Questions .
“ Do you remember your date of birth ”
No .
“ Do you know what city you’re in ”
No .
“ Do you remember any family members ”
No .
Each answer came easier than it should have .
Like she had already accepted the absence .
The nurse stepped away briefly to check something on a tablet .
Elena’s gaze shifted again .
Adrian stood near the door now .
Positioned where he could see both her and the hallway .
Not relaxed .
Not casual .
Fully Placed .
“ You’re controlling this , ” she said quietly .
He did not deny it .
“ I’m managing risk , ” he replied .
“ By not telling me anything ”
“ By keeping you alive . ”
The words landed heavier than she expected .
Her eyes sharpened .
“ From who ”
A beat .
Then he said it again .
“ The people who think you should be dead . ”
Her chest tightened slightly .
The nurse returned before she could push further .
“ We’re going to run a scan to check for internal injuries , ” she said .
Elena nodded once .
They guided her through another set of halls into imaging . The machine hummed softly as she lay still inside it .
For the first time since waking up, she had nothing to do .
No movement .
No action .
Just stillness .
And in that stillness something shifted .
A flicker .
Not a full memory, just a fragment .
White walls .
Bright lights .
A voice giving instructions .
“ Again . Faster . ”
Her fingers twitched .
Her breathing changed slightly .
Then it was gone .
She opened her eyes as the scan ended .
The technician helped her sit up .
“ You okay ” he asked .
“ Yes , ” she said automatically .
But her mind was no longer quiet .
They brought her back to the room .
Adrian was still there .
Of course he was, he had not moved .
“ Something’s wrong with me , ” she said .
He studied her .
“ Yes , ” he said .
No hesitation .
No attempt to soften it .
She exhaled slowly .
“ And you know what it is . ”
A pause .
Then
“ Part of it , ” he said .
Her frustration sharpened into something colder .
“ Then start talking . ”
Before he could respond, the nurse returned again, this time with a different energy .
Less routine .
More alert .
“ We need to confirm your information , ” she said, looking directly at Elena .
“ Full name again ”
“ Elena Voss , ” she replied .
The nurse’s eyes flicked to the tablet then back to Elena .
A slight frown .
“ Can you spell that ”
Elena did .
The nurse typed quickly .
The silence stretched just a second too long .
Then the nurse stepped back .
“ I’ll be right back , ” she said .
She left the room quickly .
Too quickly .
Elena’s gaze snapped to Adrian .
He was already watching the door .
“ What was that ” she asked .
His expression tightened, just enough to matter .
“ A bit of a problem , ” he said .
Her pulse picked up slightly .
“ What kind of problem ”
He looked at her, really looked this time .No distance . No deflection .
Just direct .
“ The kind we don’t have time for , ” he said .
Footsteps approached in the hallway . More than one person, their voices, low but urgent .
Elena felt it before anything happened .
That shift . That tension in the air .
Her body responded first .
She swung her legs off the bed without thinking .
The door opened .
Two hospital staff stepped in but their posture was wrong .
Too stiff . Too focused .
Not medical .
Elena’s eyes locked onto them every instinct in her sharpened at once .
Adrian moved slightly in front of her .
Positioning again .
Blocking again .
One of the men spoke .
“ Miss Voss , we need you to come with us . ”
His tone was controlled, too controlled .
Elena did not move .
Her gaze flicked to Adrian .
Then back to them .
“ No , ” she said .
Silence .
Then the second man reached inside his jacket .
Elena did not think .
She moved .
Fast .
Too fast .
Her hand caught his wrist before he could pull anything out .
She twisted .
Hard .
A sharp c***k echoed in the room .
The man dropped instantly .
The other reacted, stepping forward .
Adrian intercepted him with precise force, driving him back into the wall .
Everything happened in seconds .
Controlled . Efficient .
Elena stepped back slightly, her breathing steady .
Too steady .
She looked down at the man she had just taken down .
At the angle of his arm . At the way she knew exactly how to do it .
No hesitation .
No doubt .
Her stomach tightened .
Not from fear .
From realization .
She looked up at Adrian .
“ That wasn’t normal , ” she said .
He held her gaze .
“ No , ” he agreed .
More footsteps in the hallway .
Louder now and closer .
Adrian grabbed her wrist .
Firm . Urgent .
“ We have to go , ” he said .
This time there was no room for argument .
Elena nodded once .
And followed .
