You Still Work For Me

1339 Words
Three months passed after Maureen Green disappeared from Country X. Life in Country A felt quieter. Softer. No terrifying board meetings. No cold skyscrapers filled with tension. And most importantly— No Jordan Rodriguez. Maureen now worked for a mid-sized entertainment and marketing company called Vesper Group, located in the center of the city. The workload remained heavy, but unlike Rodriguez Corporation, the atmosphere felt relaxed. Employees laughed openly. People smiled. Nobody looked like they were constantly preparing for death during meetings. Yet despite the peaceful environment, Maureen still found herself waking up some nights remembering Jordan’s cold voice. His sharp eyes. The terrifying silence he carried everywhere. And the memory of the night she left without saying goodbye properly. She hated that she still thought about him. Especially because he never once contacted her afterward. Not a single message. Not a single call. Which was exactly what she wanted. …Right? — Monday morning arrived quietly. Maureen entered the Vesper Group building carrying coffee and several files while greeting coworkers politely. “Morning, Maureen!” “Good morning.” “You’re early again!” She smiled softly. “Habit.” Inside the elevator, she adjusted her blouse tiredly while suppressing discomfort twisting through her lower abdomen. Her period had started that morning. Unfortunately, the cramps were terrible. Still, she ignored it. Ignoring pain had become natural long ago. When the elevator doors opened, chaos immediately greeted her. Employees rushed around nervously while whispering excitedly. Maureen frowned slightly. “What happened?” One employee looked completely panicked. “You didn’t hear?!” “Hear what?” “The company was bought overnight!” Maureen blinked. “What?” Another employee rushed over dramatically. “Apparently some billionaire businessman acquired the entire company last night.” Confusion spread across Maureen’s face. “That suddenly?” “They said the new owner is terrifying.” “Cold too.” “Like actually scary.” A strange feeling settled heavily inside Maureen’s chest. Then suddenly— The large conference room doors opened. Silence instantly swallowed the entire office floor. Employees froze. Some nearly stopped breathing. Slow footsteps echoed calmly across the marble floor. And then— Jordan Rodriguez entered the building. Maureen’s heart stopped. For several seconds, she genuinely thought she was hallucinating. Black tailored suit. Cold expression. Sharp dark eyes. Exactly the same. The entire office looked terrified already. Meanwhile, Jordan’s gaze moved calmly across the employees before stopping directly on Maureen. The atmosphere changed instantly. Several workers exchanged confused looks. Because the new CEO was staring at her like he already knew her. Maureen felt frozen in place. Jordan walked toward her slowly. Every step felt deliberate. Controlled. Dangerous. He stopped directly in front of her. Silence stretched heavily. Then finally— “You disappeared well.” The quiet statement made her chest tighten instantly. Nobody around them even breathed. Maureen forced herself to remain calm. “…Mr. Rodriguez.” Jordan’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You look surprised.” “You bought this company?” “Yes.” “Why?” Jordan stared at her calmly. Then answered without hesitation. “Because you still work for me.” Shock flashed across her face instantly. “What?” Jordan pulled a folded document from his briefcase before handing it to her. Maureen looked down slowly. Her resignation letter. Unsigned. Her breathing stopped briefly. Jordan’s voice remained cold. “I never approved it.” The surrounding employees looked completely confused now. Maureen stared at him in disbelief. “You followed me here?” “Yes.” The simple answer made her speechless. Jordan glanced briefly toward the shocked staff members around them before speaking again. “Conference room. Five minutes.” Then he walked away calmly like he had not just destroyed her peace entirely. The second he disappeared, the office exploded into whispers. “Oh my God.” “They know each other?” “Was that romantic tension or murder tension?” “Both.” Meanwhile, Maureen stood frozen while still clutching the unsigned resignation letter. Her peaceful life had officially ended. Again. — That same evening, across the city, another kind of chaos unfolded. At Westbridge International Academy, Emily Rodriguez nearly screamed while staring at her phone. “He approved it?!” Beside her, Emma Hayes gasped dramatically. “Your brother actually said yes?” Emily looked equally shocked. “Yes!” Lily Carter narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Are we sure somebody didn’t kidnap Jordan Rodriguez and replace him with a clone?” Emily laughed loudly. After weeks of begging, Jordan had finally approved her attendance at the international musical competition happening in Country A. More specifically— She had been selected as one of the backup dancers for Adrian Knight’s upcoming concert performance. The entire school had nearly lost their minds after the announcement. Girls envied her. Teachers looked shocked. And Adrian himself remained annoyingly calm about everything. Currently, rehearsal preparations filled the massive concert arena while dancers rushed around excitedly backstage. Emily adjusted her rehearsal jacket nervously. “I still can’t believe this.” Emma squealed beside her. “You’re literally dancing behind Adrian Knight.” Lily looked ready to faint. “If he smiles at me once, I’ll pass out.” “You’re embarrassing,” Emily muttered. Then suddenly— The backstage entrance opened. The atmosphere shifted instantly. Adrian Knight entered calmly wearing black cargo pants and a loose hoodie while headphones rested around his neck. Even exhausted from rehearsals, he still looked unfairly attractive. Several dancers immediately straightened nervously. Adrian’s gaze moved lazily across the room before stopping briefly on Emily. Recognition flickered faintly across his face. “The girl who attacks people with books.” Emily stared at him. “…You remember that?” One corner of Adrian’s mouth lifted slightly. “You nearly broke my nose.” Emma looked seconds away from dying beside her. Meanwhile, far across the city— Maureen sat quietly inside her small office at Vesper Group while pressing one hand against her stomach painfully. The cramps had worsened badly. She closed her eyes briefly. Unfortunately— A knock sounded against the door. Then Jordan entered without waiting for permission. Maureen immediately sat straighter. Jordan noticed instantly. His sharp gaze narrowed slightly. “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” “You’re pale.” “I’m fine.” Jordan stared at her silently for several seconds. Then his eyes shifted toward the painkillers sitting near her desk. Understanding flickered briefly across his face. Maureen noticed immediately and wanted to disappear. “Don’t say anything.” Jordan’s expression remained unreadable. “You’re in pain.” “I said I’m fine.” Jordan ignored her completely. Instead, he turned and walked out of the office. Maureen blinked in confusion. Ten minutes later— He returned carrying multiple shopping bags. Maureen stared at him. “…What is that?” Jordan placed the bags onto her desk calmly. “Supplies.” Confused, Maureen opened one bag slightly. Then froze. Sanitary pads. An unreasonable amount of sanitary pads. Different brands. Different sizes. Heat immediately flooded her face. “You bought all this?!” Jordan removed his coat calmly. “I didn’t know which one you use.” Maureen nearly died from embarrassment. “You could’ve asked Clara!” Jordan ignored that entirely. “There’s medicine too.” Maureen looked speechless. Then her eyes landed on another smaller bag. “A dress?” Jordan glanced toward it briefly. “You looked uncomfortable earlier.” Inside rested a soft dark blue dress made from lighter fabric. Simple. Elegant. Comfortable. Maureen stared at it silently. Nobody had ever done something this strangely considerate for her before. Especially not Jordan Rodriguez. The coldest man she had ever met. Jordan loosened his tie slightly before speaking calmly. “Wear it tomorrow.” Maureen looked up slowly. “Why?” Jordan’s gaze settled on her quietly. “Because I bought it.” The answer sounded cold. Direct. Completely Jordan. Yet somehow— Her heart still betrayed her by beating faster anyway.
