The white wolf, my mate has been comatose for four days now. Our healers don’t know why she is so weak or was. No one knows. Her sister and her aunt claim not to know what happened to her. Other than the fighting she was involved in against the hunters. I shift again in my chair at her bedside.
That’s when she stirs. My heart leaps into my throat as I bolt to my feet, watching for a movement that could have only been my imagination. She blinks. Again. As a Rogue, I know she could attack me at any moment, but I can’t help wanting to be closer to her.
“You’re safe. You’re in a healer’s ward of my home. Don’t panic,” I step closer.
Her eyes flash to me and I gasp at their piercing, silver color. She looks away as she takes in her surroundings and attempts to sit herself up, but her arms shake at her effort and she must lay back again.
I pick up a stiff pillow that I had been resting my arm on, “Here. Let’s put this behind your back to prop you up,” I pause, “Can I…?”
She looks at me hesitantly before giving me the slightest of nods. She sits up as far as she can, and I hook my arm under hers to pull her up. She takes in a sharp breath at our skins contact. I quickly prop her on the pillow and step away again. She looks away again as a light pink blush flushes her cheeks and the tops of her ears. It dissipates almost as quickly as it came. I take a deep breath, unsure what to say to her.
“Th…” Her voice is raspy, and she tries to clear her throat, “Thank you.”
I quickly pour her some water, “Here. This will help.”
She downs the glass before speaking again, “I am Sienna,” She swallows hard, “Enna. My wolf is Sage.”
I smile, “I am Blair, and my wolf is Nyla. I am Beta to my brother, the Alpha, and his Luna. You are…”
The door to the room flies open and her sister comes running in with the Aunt, “Sienna!” She maneuvers past me and crushes Enna with a hug.
Enna, in her momentary discomfort, hugs her back; awkwardly.
“Child don’t crush her. I’m sure your sister would prefer to be able to breathe,” Her aunt Rana advises.
Shock washes over Enna as she struggles to get out from under her sister and to Rana, “Rana!” She stumbles, but her aunt catches her, “You… You…”
Rana puts a hand to her head, “All is well now, niece. Be calm,” The middle-aged, blind woman hugs her tightly with tears in her eyes.
The reunion makes my heart happy for them, but at the same time I wish I could hold my mate like that. Her family has asked me to wait to tell her about this, as she may not know, until she is more climatized to her current situation.
I sigh as I take in the situation. Her family has not been very forthcoming with information about themselves, other than Rana and Enna had been living as Rogues while Lara was imprisoned by humans and was only just recently reunited with them. The only one who could, if she does, disclose any information, would be Enna herself. It makes me wonder what could be so much of a secret that they would have to wait until Enna woke to disclose anything.
As I begin to ponder the various possibilities, Lara yelps from beside me, bringing me back to reality. Enna is on the floor, the bandaging on her leg is quickly staining with blood. I rush to her as Rana holds her moon-kissed hair from her face as she dry heaves towards the floor.
“Sienna!” I snatch my mate up off the ground with ease and bring her to the bed as I mind link with a healer who comes running in momentarily afterwards.
“Why was she up? I told you not to let her up if she were to wake,” The healer tears off the bandaging as Enna closes her eyes and begins to shiver again, “Get a blanket, she’s freezing and going into shock again.”
Lara is quick to move as I can only stand and watch, unsure what to do.
Nyla whines from with inside my head, “what are you doing? Help our mate.”
“Her family said that she can't know right now. That her situation is delicate. We can't.”
She whimpers and dissipates to the back of my mind again.
“Blair,” the healer says, “take her hand. You are her mate. You need to help calm her. If I can't find out where the infection is coming from. I'm going to have to open up the whole wound again. And if she does not still the infection that is ravaging her body will continue to worsen her condition.”
I stepped forward towards Sienna again and take her hand. Within moments she begins to steal and relax under the healers knowing hands as he tries to work the infection from her body.
“I found it,” he says, “there is still a bit of silver inside of her leg. It must come out. you three will have to hold her down for me to remove it.”
Lara and Rana are at the beside instantly; Lara presses down on her legs and Rana takes her right shoulder, leaving me the left.
“On the count of three,” The healer instructs, “One… Two… Three!”
Sienna growls and suddenly wind batters the windows as the healer digs two fingers into the wound. She raises against us and uses enough force to shake the four of us from her bedside. We land, scattered about the room, and are left to watch as Enna, herself, digs into her leg and triumphantly removes the shard of the silver sword that had resided within her. She glares at us all, now with one green eye and one silver, as her wolf joins her.
My breath catches, not only at her extreme power, but her relatives and I were the only ones who know she is an Alpha… Now the healer does. He will have to report his findings to my brother. He will not be pleased about a Rogue Alpha in his territory.
Her gaze lands on me and I can tell that she is silently communicating with her wolf, Sage. Without breaking her gaze upon me she addresses her family, “If you don’t mind, I require something suitable for an audience with the FireFall Alpha, Lara… Rana, we have much to discuss. However, do you mind assisting Lara?”
Rana nods, “We will discuss all in time. Let us first see what the day holds.”
As Rana departs Sienna and Sage turn to the healer, “I appreciate your services during my time, but until I ask for them again, no other healer will lay their hands on me. Have we got an understanding?”
Healer Grom sneers as he tries to respond to her. I growl at him, “You are dismissed, Grom.”
He glares at me before bowing his head, “Yes, Beta,” he grumbles all the way out the door and presumable down the hallway to my brother as well.”
Sage fully takes over now that the door is closed, and all others have left. She closes her eyes with a sigh before rubbing her forehead, “Your healer is off to consult with your Alpha, I assume.”
I nod, “I had not disclosed to him your Alpha status. Nor had your aunt and sister. All he knew is that you were an insured Rogue and…” I stop myself.
“And your mate,” Sage finishes before looking at me, “Sienna and I have not spoke much on the matter before, but know that we are glad to finally have our mate by our side,” She pauses and rolls her eyes again, “With Sienna, however, I beg your patience. She is rough around the edges but give her time and you will see her for who she really is. I promise this to you.”
I take a deep breath as I step closer to them, “I’ve waited twelve years for my mate, if we have to wait a while longer, then it is what it is. Can you let Sienna through as well? So that I might say my next words to her too.”
A silver eye appears now, and they regard me with uncertainty.
“I do not know what trials you have been through, and some day I hope you will accept me and trust me enough to tell me. I wish to ask one thing though.”
They nod as my heart hammers in my chest at our closeness, “Do not reject us. Do not make your decision now but let us get to know each other first.”
She looks away, “When you know who and what I am, you will not wish to know me…”
The door opens again, and Lara sets a green dress and brown boots down on the chair before leaving again.
“You don’t know that. A month. That is the amount time that I ask you for.”
She looks back at me, “Your word on the time frame?”
I nod, “You have my word. If, by then, you haven’t accepted us, then we will accept your rejection.”
