The days began to blur inside the stone fortress.
After the first brutal night, the routine shifted in small, almost imperceptible ways. The guards no longer dragged me through the halls like a prisoner. Instead, they escorted me with detached politeness.
My meals improved. I started eating more healthy and delicious meals. Warm stew instead of stale bread, fresh fruit, even a small cup of spiced wine one evening. After each night, new furnitures were added to my once plebeian room. A vanity, a couch and even a wooden chest for my few belongings.
Elara visited more often than I expected and I was more than delighted by her visits.
She would appear in the late mornings, her dark robes whispering against the stone floors, carrying a quiet kindness that felt dangerously out of place in Lucian’s domain.
Sometimes she brought books or a simple embroidery hoop. Other times she simply sat with me in silence, as if she understood that words could be too heavy.
“You’re adjusting,” she said one afternoon, watching me pick at a plate of roasted meat and vegetables. “Most don’t last this long without breaking.”
I glanced up at her. “Is that supposed to comfort me?”
A faint smile touched her lips. “It’s the truth. My brother… he breaks people. But you still have fire in your eyes. That’s rare.”
Her company became the only softness I had. She never asked for details about the nights, but she always seemed to know when the ache in my body was worse.
She would press warm cloth to my body when Lucian was too rough with me or simply sit beside me while I stared out the small window at the distant mountains.
Each night I was taken to Lucian’s chamber.
He never spoke much. His touches remained demanding, his body hard and unrelenting. But something in the air between us had begun to change. I no longer fought the pleasure that flooded me every time he claimed me.
My wolf had grown greedy for it, for the heat, the fullness, the moments when I forgot I was supposed to hate him.
On the seventh night, something shifted inside me.
I stood before him naked, heart hammering. When he pulled me close, I rose on my toes and pressed my lips to his for the first time. It was tentative, almost shy.
Lucian froze.
His hand tightened on my waist, and for a terrifying second I thought he would push me away. His dark eyes searched mine, cold and stormy. Then, with a low growl that vibrated through his chest, he kissed me back.
It was nothing like the mechanical claiming of the previous nights.
This kiss was hungry, devouring. His mouth moved against mine with sudden fire, tongue sweeping in, claiming that too. The kiss lit something wild in him. He lifted me effortlessly, wrapping my legs around his hips as he carried me to the bed. For the first time, he wasn’t just taking—he was consuming.
We moved together like we were starving. My nails dug into his scarred back. I moaned openly now, no longer biting my lips to silence myself. Lucian’s usual control fractured. He whispered rough praises against my throat “That’s it… let me hear you” as he drove deeper, harder, until we both shattered.
Afterward, when our breathing had slowed, he didn’t immediately pull away.
Instead, he rolled onto his back and tugged me against his chest.
“Stay,” he said, voice low and rough. “Sleep here tonight.”
My wolf leapt with pure, unfiltered joy inside me. The mate bond I once shared with Kael had never felt like this. The warmth spread through every cracked piece of me. I curled into Lucian’s side, my head resting over the steady beat of his heart, and for a few precious hours, I let myself pretend I wasn’t a captive.
The next morning, still wrapped in the haze of that unexpected tenderness, I tested the fragile ground beneath my feet.
“Lucian…” I whispered as he dressed. “Could I… go into the town today? Just for a short while.”
He stopped suddenly turning to face me. The change in him was instant and terrifying.
He made few steps towards me, eyes flashing with cold fury. “How dare you ask anything of me?”
I flinched, scrambling to sit up, the sheet clutched to my chest. “I only meant—”
“You are not my mate. You are not my guest.” His voice was ice. “You are a tool for my pleasure. Nothing more. Do not mistake last night for weakness on my part.”
The words sliced deeper than any silver chain ever could.
“Get out,” he ordered, jaw tight. “And do not think you have earned any favor here.”
I dressed with shaking hands and was escorted back to my room in silence. The moment the door closed, the tears came—hot, ugly, and endless. I cried until my throat burned and my eyes swelled. My wolf whimpered in confusion, the earlier joy now twisted into fresh pain.
Why did every scrap of warmth have to come with such cruelty?
The next morning, Elara found me still curled on the bed, face buried in the thin pillow.
She sat beside me without a word at first, simply stroking my hair the way a mother might. When I finally told her what happened how I had dared to ask for one small thing, how Lucian had exploded and thrown me out she listened with quiet patience.
“You wanted to go to the town to find Zara,” I said hoarsely, wiping my eyes. “My ex-best friend… she took something precious from me. A necklace Kael gave her. It was mine once. I just… I wanted it back.”
Elara’s expression softened with understanding, but her voice remained firm.
“I will look into it for you. Quietly. If this Zara is among the captives or servants, I will see what can be done. But you must be careful, little one.
Never anger Lucian again. Do not ask for anything. Do not presume. Just survive these thirty days. Please him when you’re called, endure the nights, and when the time is up, you will walk free.”
She squeezed my hand gently.
“Keep your head down. The fortress has eyes and ears everywhere. And my brother… his heart is buried deeper than you think. Do not try to dig it up too soon.”
I nodded, even as fresh tears slipped down my cheeks.
Survive.
That was all I had to do.
But as Elara left and the door clicked shut, I wondered how many more nights I could spend in Lucian’s bed before I would be discarded and tossed back into the cold.
And what if I didn’t want just thirty days. What if I actually wanted to stay here, permanently. My wolf leaped at the idea and I knew I was slowly becoming attracted the scariest man I had ever seen.
